It makes it harder to commit social welfare fraud. I don’t know why they don’t just say this instead of the line they trot out that it helps deliver services more efficiently
The tinfoil hate brigade (like me) are up in arms over it. People objecting to the Government being able to link every service back to one overall account/person. They are also expanding the requirements for it from beyond receiving social welfare payments to applying for passports etc. But remember it’s mandatory, not compulsory.
This is it exactly. Like just come out and say it instead of denying it and having hateful cunts like Regina Doherty saying well the card is not compulsory but it is mandatory to access Social services. It was first introduced for social services that if you were accessing social services that you would need one, grand no problem but now it is extending to Passport and drivers licences so every body will need one regardless of whether you avail of social services or not. That is the main problem that I would have that it is just sneaky, why not come out and say it.
I’d say the concerns that people have is the personal information that can be shared and the I suppose the lack of trust in the government not to sell that information on or use it for other means.
The ID card has no legal basis for precluding people from getting payments. That’s the issue. They need to update the 2005 legislation and pass it in the dail. Whether it’s s good idea is irrelevant, it’s the action of a totalitarian state to impose this without proper discourse
