Non Matchday Celtic Discussion 2013/14

Probably Aberdeen - we have them in the cup next week.

Griffiths and The Fridge are playing upfront for the U20s at the moment. The Fridge has scored.

Griffiths subbed at half time. What a waste of money.

The Fridge has the U20s a goal up on Hearts and has just been substituted.

BBC Scotland are reporting that Celtic will hold Champions League qualifiers in Murrayfield in July. The club has yet to confirm it.

Not Murray Park, no ??

So the curtain has come down on another season for Celtic. How was it for you?

The club announced a ÂŁ21m profit yesterday for the 6 months ending 31st December 2013. Selling our best players and/or offering them significant pay reductions while reporting extremely healthy financial results.

Lennon’s summer signings haven’t been as successful as in previous campaigns with the notable exception of Van Dijk. His selection of Samaras today was pretty surprising too but the team that started should have performed much better.

Overall, we’ve played fairly average football bar dishing out the odd thumping here and there. 2 domestic cup finals at Celtic Park this season and Celtic will be in neither of them. Our record in the cups under Lennon isn’t that impressive all told.

I wouldn’t really say they are his signings, probably recommendations from the scouts that he gives the approval to but he has hardly given the likes of Boerrigter and Balde any action at all this season. Griffiths definitely seems to be a Lennon signing however as he really seemed keen on him, he look as uninspiring as I though in his brief cameo today.

Overall it’s extremely depressing and I think Lennon is at the root of the problems, he is a servile underling to Peter Lawwell, tactically he is clueless, his football is stale and negative and moreso that most managers he seems to be horribly favourable to certain players - some who don’t deserve it. I actually wouldn’t be surprised to hear him conclude that we lost today because Mulgrew was unavailable. I don’t understand why you were surprised Samaras played today, I could have called that one a mile away.

The crowd today is indicative of the fans dismay both at the way the board are running this club and the football and team selections being served up by an incompetent and arrogant ginger fool. I also saw Lawwell was out in the media today saying how we could spend ÂŁ8m on one player this summer - utter bollocks like that make me want to take a meat cleaver to him.

Lennon simply has to go, we need a progressive manager at the helm. The board must be at least slightly worried at the alarming and increasing drop in attendances. They must be slightly worried at the ability of this team to make the CL next season and even moreso the ability of the manager to take this team to the CL this season, we were very close to getting fucked out by a bunch of Kazakh herders this season. The only person I detest more than Lennon is Lawwell.

P.S. Adam Matthews is shit.

We started poorly with shaky European performances before the home game against Karagandy which was excellent.

After that there hasn’t been much in the way of encouragement. We have a decent centre back partnership now, though Ambrose is still prone to errors. Better than anything we’ve had since O’Neill was in charge anyway. And we have a few good full backs alongside them and a goalkeeper who has serious flaws but also has some excellent qualities and will command a decent fee.

Our real problems begin further forward. Wanyama hasn’t been even nearly replaced. I think Johansen has good qualities and so does Brown but they need a 3rd player alongside them and our obvious candidate has left.

We’re struggling with formations then. Commons and Virgil have been our best players this season but Commons doesn’t have a striker to play off since Hooper left. Stokes isn’t that player, nor is Pukki - they’re both more similar to Commons than foils for him. Griffiths is more approaching the mould of what we need but I doubt he’s good enough. Baldé offers us something different but it’s very different and it’s hard to play any football through him.

Samaras has had a dreadful season and he’s being accommodated too much. He has a reputation as a “big game player” but he didn’t do it in any big games this season and there are none left. Forrest is talented enough on the other flank but is frequently injured and his decision making can be poor. Hopefully Boerrigter can shake off his injuries and become a force in the remaining matches because we could really do with him pushing on for next season.
I said at the end of last season that a couple of excellent performances in the CL masked some major deficiencies in the team and we weren’t as far advanced as last year suggested. I think our European efforts this season were more reflective of the squad. A Europa League run should be our aim to maintain interest outside the league.

Our transfer strategy has been disappointing. We have lost 4 automatic starters in Hooper, Wilson Wanyama and Ledley. Virgil has been an improvement on Wilson but we’re a way off replacing the others. We can’t expect continued success in buying one bargain player for each position. Getting Hooper, Wanyama, Izzy, Kayal (for a while) etc for bargain fees was excellent business but if we’re shopping speculatively we need to expect mixed results. I do expect us to find it hard to attract players to the club, which makes Ledley’s departure more disappointing, but our targets in January seemed particularly unimaginative.

Another brace for Tony Watt last night. Bring him home.

Has Lemon tendered his resignation yet?

Nir Biton tore his groin muscle playing for Israel and is likely to be out for quite some time. A shame - he was playing well lately and starting to establish himself in the team.

Ah that’s shitty.

Celtic Park hosted the League Cup Final today. Aberdeen defeated Caley Thistle after a penalty shoot-out following a dour scoreless draw. 40,000 Aberdeen supporters were in attendance:

Why don’t we sign anyone on pre-contracts anymore? We don’t actively be seeming to pursuing this anymore after successfully grabbing Ledley, Matthews and Lustig in this manner.

I see Kris Commons has selected Gary Hooper as the best player he’s played with in his 4-year Celtic career to date. Honourable mentions to Forster and Van Dijk.

If Ross County hold on for a win against Aberdeen tonight then Celtic can seal the title tomorrow (March 26th) if they win away to Partick Thistle.

It finished 1-1 but my math was out earlier; Celtic retain the title with a Glasgow derby victory tomorrow night.

When was the last time Celtic won the title in a Glasgow derby? The world will be watching tonight.

It’s match day - perhaps a separate Glasgow derby thread can be set up ?

The police usually prohibit Glasgow derby title deciders for safety and security reasons so Glasgow will be on a knife-edge tonight.

Agree with @thedancingbaby that a separate match thread is required.
