I was reading somewhere that there’s only been 27 Covid deaths to date in NZ. That can’t be right, surely? How many have Ireland, for comparison?
I believe it’s over 5,200 now - and the scary thing is it could have been a lot higher, and would have been had fellas here had their way.
Still, Ireland had more Covid deaths last week alone (40) than New Zealand has had in the entirety of the pandemic.
I think the big problem a lot of fellas here have is that New Zealand’s death toll isn’t near high enough for their liking.

Why would people say NZ has been a failure so? 
It’s part of that Trump/Brexit type phenomenon you see a lot online where people take a position based on an ideology of rejection of knowledge and any sort of intellect. They hold such ideologies in the first place because of i) fear, ii) bloated ego paradoxically mixed with massive inferiority complexes iii) generally being thick cunts.
As that position is relentlessly proven wrong, their egos can’t take it and they come up with more and more fantastical arguments to try and pretend it was correct, essentially retreating into a full blown world of fantasy and make believe. Their new one now is that fascist drones from Poland’s ruling fascist party are actually “defenders of freedom” as they stick their unwanted arses into telling Australia and New Zealand what to do. This would be Poland, with 400 times the death rate of New Zealand.
You wouldn’t mind but one of the lads above who hates what a success New Zealand’s policy has been has simultaneously been peddling the ideology of a universally ridiculed fringe conspiracy nut who claims that vaccines are going to create a new super virus which will kill us all. I’m pretty sure he’s one of the same people who complain about “fearmongering”.

Interesting to see excess mortality so far this year, though I expect that the Irish data is a little clunky from looking at this. They also likely have not adjusted for population growth.
The Economist shows both Ireland and New Zealand have both had relatively low excess mortality.
I think I read that NZ had nearly the exact same 12 month deaths to June 2021 as the previous 12 months which is actually quite surprising given that they had little Covid and the flu was kept it short supply.
This is good for New Zealand though, as was a couple of Australian states facing up to reality. New Zealand will need tourism again and will need foreign doctors. The suggested border closure lengths until recently were storing up longer term damage for them.
I also felt a frustration and anger that Australia has been so behind the curve this far into a worldwide pandemic. Did they learn any lessons from the rest of the world? Was Australia as a nation willing to lean on and learn from other nations or does the mantra of “our borders will protect us” mean that there is no need to look beyond them? The insularity here felt so alien to me.
There was little evidence of connection and support as a nation here. In Ireland there was a real sense of community. Here in Australia it does not feel that we are in this together. In fact Australia feels very separate from the rest of the world, as does its neighbour New Zealand, and there is a real sense of separation within the country.
Furthermore, Australian citizens in India have been told they cannot return due to India being a Covid hotspot. Should they try to enter the country they will be imprisoned. I could never imagine Ireland treating its citizens this way.
The country halved all international flights (yet somehow celebrities and sports people seemed to travel in and out of the country with no problem). As a migrant here on a visa, I have to seek a permit to leave the country and make a case for exceptional circumstances that require me to leave. It could take months to get a permit and there were various pieces of evidence required to build a case for leaving

I guess the implied “lesson” is their death rate wasn’t nearly high enough.
Sort of like a sober driver being told to drive like somebody with 10 pints and a couple of lines of cocaine down them.
Or a clean restaurant kitchen being told that a rat infestation would be good for them.
