He was positively drooling over Kelly, absolved him of any blame whatsoever. Not even slight criticism over presiding over the Westmeath result. Thought it was a bit strange too.

He really put the boot into Sheedy. “He was chosen to select a new manager and remain on in an advisory capacity.” He repeated it two or three times. He was fuming.

Nobody seems to know what Sheedy’s role was other than to head up a board to appoint the new manager.
That said, if they can’t get the players to fully commit then I don’t see what Liam Sheedy sitting in the crowd is going to achieve, I don’t think he has any role in coaching or selecting the team, strange one.

I haven’t heard anyone who has had a bad word to say about Kelly in fairness. He got rid of a few lazy fellas but they weren’t world beaters. He really has a poor hand to play with. I haven’t been to any games but I can’t imagine his insistence on a sweeper suits Offaly, whose few decent players are biggish slow forwards

Agree re county board but I’d blame the clubs up here more. There are about 4 well run clubs in the whole county, 2 of which are solely football. Birr and Tullamore are turning into rugby towns as they make an effort to train and look after the kids and foster a club spirit.

Rugby is streets ahead in planning of training, matches & player discipline which is drawing in parents at an alarming rate.

I haven’t seen or heard him mentioned in ages. My understanding is that the county board appointed him to head a five man committee to appoint a new manager. The committee went on to appoint Sheedy’s former (possibly current) work colleague from bank to the post. Bank colleague subsequently convinces county board to appoint Sheedy to an advisory role with county team. This involved once monthly trips to the midlands and included one on one meetings with players. I’d imagine they presumed he’d have the common decency to turn up for the few championship games they’d have to play but obviously didn’t include this in his contract.

Whether it was in his contract or not he should’ve turned up for the game. If he’s not interested in going to watch them play then he’s not the right man for the job and should be told to fuck off

Offaly produced easily the worst teams in the country the Clare development squads came up against. I saw an U-14 game between the two counties one night that had two of the 90s Offaly stars involved in a management capacity. An hours worth of roaring and screaming about pulling on the ball was a fair indication of why they are so far behind everyone else.

Offaly have a tiny pick to begin with. They can’t afford anything less than the very best standard of coaching if they want to be competitive at the top level.
