Congrats @peddlerscross @carryharry @johnnysachs @Mullach_Ide and other Tipp posters on a monumental win for the minors yesterday.
Fair play to Tipp Minors, who were incredibly gutsy. They deserved to win.
Passing up eight or nine excellent scoring chances â dreadful wides, fluffs, selfishness â over last quarter really cost Kilkenny. Deflation after deflation, as Tipp grew and grew. But Tipperary had started devouring them on breaking ball even before the first sending off.
The Kilkenny sideline did not get tactical matters right. Fair enough, being two men up is almost unprecedented. But still⌠Kilkenny needed to have a man in front of their half back line on the Tipperary puckout, so as to have a numerical advantage both in front and behind when forcing Tipperary to go long on puckout. No point in having three men marking one Tipperary inside forward behind the three Tipperary half forwards.
AnyhowâŚ
Harsh on fellas doing their best but they completely lost control of an extremely winnable game as everything fell for them.
It can happen when one team is numerically disadvantaged that they can rise their game and try to get even more out of themselves; on the other hand a mental softness can creep into the team that maintains the full complement in that the belief is there now that the game is won and they only have to hurl. I suspect that came into the Kilkenny playersâ heads last night after the second sending off and once that crept in it is hard to stop.
Ah, I do not think it is harsh, Harry. And I was specific about what I think, as an adjustment, should have been â fairly obviously â done.
Very true. Sense that âthe game will win itselfâ creeps in.
As I said, the fairest of play to the Tipperary Minors for their guts and skill. But a complete meltdown by Kilkenny on several fronts. That element would worry me far more than losing this game. Tipperary players , individually and collectively, were far better coached and drilled.
I think the most disappointing thing from a KK management point of view is that they had 3 breaks to reset (HT, FT and HT in ET) and never got a grip of it at all.
For large periods the played with both spare men in their full back line. They regularly managed to create an overlap at midfield but the shooting was off.
Spare men have always been used in defence. With an (albeit rare in hurling) 2-man advantage isnât there something to be said for despatching a rover up into the forwards and let the already stretched opposition try deal with it.
Multiple times during those periods KK made poor decisions in possession from 70/80 yards when they had 40 yards of free space in front on them.
Baffling how they continued this approach through the entirety.
Bit of a cliche but KK played like they were down numbers and Tipp visa versa.
Putting a âroverâ into the forwards would only put 14 lads into an already packed space making it even harder to score.
In fairness they tried the long range shots but with five or six wides in a row they stopped and started hitting in the long ball again. If the shots had gone over it would have been a straight forward walk to victory, but they didnât.
What kk should have done was pull out a full forward as a third midfielder. This would have created space inside and loaded the midfield making it harder for Tipp to run it through into the forwards.
Itâs time to put the bed the Richie Hogan excuse from the 2019 Senior Final anyway.
Losing a player or even two harshly in the first half of an All Ireland Final doesnât have to be fatal.
It can be done.
They werent winning any 50 50 balls in there. McDermott had a very good first half but faded out of it. Mullen wasnt given a sniff by O Reilly and all the other Tipp backs were winning their individual battles. Ryan, Murray and O Brien foraged deep and continuously broke tackles. This in turn meant the KK spare man who occupied the half back line was drawn to the runner freeing up space in behind the Kilkenny rearguard. The 2nd KK spare man instead of being stationed on the KK 45 yard line should have been closer to midfield trying to a) curb the runs at source and b) being closer to breaking ball under the Darragh English puckout. This would have ensured more possession won and more importantly scoring opportunities closer to the Tipp goal. The wind was hanging those puckouts and Tipp would have found it very hard to get out. Dollard showed in mins 6 to 25 that he was well able to marshall back there when it was 15 v 14. Those 20-25 minute spell in 1st half were kilkennys best of the whole game when they were most balanced and got 3 unanswered points. As it were the old adage of too many cooks spoil the broth and it was certainly the case with KK in 2nd half in their own back line.
Healy Park is a tragic setting for an All-Ireland childrenâs football final.
Armagh are playing in their away kit of all black because Derry want to play in their fake away kit which is universally recognised as their home kit.
Armagh the more pleasant team to watch here. Almost a beautiful counter attacking goal for Armagh there but the full forward Duffy elected to try and take a first touch rather than apply the sliderule association football style finish that was needed.
L/Derry 1-3 Armagh 0-6 HT.
Back post fisted goal from 2 yards off a loopy handpass for L/Derry. That could be the deciding score.
Derry have really gotten their act together at all levels. This could be their 3rd All-Ireland minor title since Covid. Great to see. Plenty of snipers in Murphy gloves filtering through.
Ah christ, shoot. What a pass in for the chance to score the equalising goal but Armagh over elaborate. Thatâs the game.
GAA simpletons once again missing the chance to play Teenage Kicks after Derry win a childrenâs All-Ireland.
Valiant effort from armagh there, scoreline flattered them though. Great times ahead for derry, if we can get rid of the counry board
Youâve had a wife beater and a paedophile sympathiser as your last two managers. Whose next? Eamon Collins?
A simple congratulations would suffice.
Tremendous answer.
