Key to longevity at road running is training smarter. ‘Run your easy runs easy and your sessions hard’. I made the world of mistakes when I started running more ‘seriously’ a few years back. I picked up the usual injuries, but they were all self inflicted.
I would not consider myself to have much natural talent flatty. I’m at a decent club standard level. I enjoy the running immensely and find it great to keep the demons at bay.
Having observed “decent club standard” first hand, from my perspective, that takes a chunk of natural talent and application. It’s like swimming. I never fail to be amazed at the speed of people who would only consider themselves good club swimmers. I am equally shit at all disciplines. Big purple head on me.
@Thrawneen you can’t abandon us now! Two runs each weekend and onetwo or three at evenings during the week and you’ll be fine. You don’t have to do a pb.
Interesting to read @fenwaypark’s training to see how the other half do it. A lot of natural talent and a lor of discipline.
I ran 20 miles on Saturday at 8.30 pace. It’s all a bit mad at the long distances alright. You wouldn’t want to be making a habit of it. The time it takes is even unsustainable. The long slowish runs definitely work though. I did a half marathon two weeks ago at 1.32 which is about 5 minutes quicker than Ihe same race last year. I was so happy with the time I nearly decided to pack it in there as I’m fairly sure I’ll never run as well again.
For anyone interested, my average week is a long run on Sunday, really slow runs on Wednesday and Saturday morning with a short speed session on Tueday and maybe a tempo run on Thursday.
I ain’t no quitter. I’ll be doing my level best to make it. Sure I need to run anyway to get rid of the final few kilos so I’ll have to make time and get out there. If I can forego the booze for the 6 weekends and do some long runs then I could make it.
I’m finding it hard to get training done since I’ve been back at work. I’m very tried and the lack of decent sleep is taking its toll. I went out the door this evening and was tempted to just turn around. I’m going to persevere however, as I really just need to get a good 6 week block done prior to taper.
I’m contemplating going out at 6.3o m/m but that may be overly optimistic and its probable I will blow up. Will definitely try to negative split as second half is regarded as easier. Will make a decision on pace closer to race. Main thing is to make the starting line.
There are some hard fuckers on here. @Thrawneen , if jade fucking goody could get found 18 miles in London before being carted off, you can finish easy. Just get to the start.
I’d find it fair boring without the music. I have stopped my own regular running after getting up to running 10kms with ease but i was happy with that level as i was doing it on a treadmill and didn’t think it advisable to go beyond that as there’s too much wear and tear on the joints. I was starting to feel the odd bit of pressure on the knees when doing it and the other night i was bored so did 5km, which was first time running for about six weeks or so and my right knee was fucked the day after. I’m tempted to knock this type of exercise on the head totally now as feel it’s not doing my joints any good. I’m playing the odds squash game and get no aches from it.
