Galway team v Tipp

C callanan

D joyce
E McEntee
O Canning

R Murray
Martin Ryan
F Moore

A Cullinane
O Lynch

A Smith
C Donnelan
A Callanan

N Hayes
J Canning
N Healy
Still an average side bar the Cannings. The other Portumna players are good club players but not inter county standard.

Add the Kellys into that Tipp forward line and it wont seem too bad. Clare have noone to come back in as far as I know.
What you on about Puke? Going on reports Ive read, mainly yours I might add, the Clare backline is struggling big time with only Gerry Oā€™Grady showing any kind of form and Bugler ok at centre back the last day. Gerry Quinn possibly our best player is gone awol again. Full back is struggling and no likely contenders to replace him either, Pat Vaughan who done well at corner back last year is up in midfield. From watching Pat Donnellan last year, I dont think he is good enough and is far far too loose. Who do you reckon are the starting six backs and keeper? Even last year Clare were conceding big enough scores and there is nothing to suggest that without Frank Lohan and Gerry Quinn that things are going to get better. Midfield, Colin Lynch should only be a sub this year but who knows who is going to partner BOC. Iā€™d suggest Tony Griffin maybe. None of the forwards look in any sort of form. Overall the portents arent good.

At this stage the Munster championship is looking a poor competition. Kilkenny seem like they will annihilate everyone this year. I think Galway have to improve from last year but when you see lads like the Healys, Tierney, Murray and Farragher still on and off it wouldnt fill me with hope. If Cork pull together any kind of form they might reach a final.
It is looking like Brennan will be in goals, which could be disasterous but they will stick with him I would say, I would rather see Kelly myself, Conor Mc is going well in the corner, Dillon is starting to come into his own at full back and will be solid if unspectacular, GOG has the other corner back slot nailed downā€¦Bugler is coming into his own at Centre back and will remain there for the rest of the yearā€¦Pat Donellan is a smashing hurler KIB, I would have serious time for him, he has a few things he could improve on(shooting and final ball) but he will more than hold his ownā€¦

Gerry Quinn will be back for the Championship, although will be a sub I would say, similar to last seasonā€¦James Macinerney will get the other wing back slot and this lad is a great bit of stuff, very much in the Quinn mold only bigger and stronger, although his grip would break your heartā€¦

All in all I think that these 6 would more than hold their own against any of the 4 other forward lines in Munster come Juneā€¦When the League ends Clare will have the bones of 10 weeks to prepare for Tipp/Cork and they will spend the month of May training like lunatics, 5 nights a week doing all ball work, just like they did last year in the month of April, when the league was overā€¦

The league has been poor alright but there was nothing said last year when we were just as bad, the problem is that Mac has talked an awful amount of guff and nonsense and put pressure on himselfā€¦

When Mac was involved in the 1990ā€™s there was fierce apathy to the league and he has continued this on to his current tenureā€¦

The forwards will be our undoing not our backsā€¦Diarmuid, Carmody, Gilli and Griff are as good as nailed down starters, Colin Ryan will get one of the spots and I would say that Conlon will get the otherā€¦

BOC and Clancy will be the midfield, Pat Vaughan just hasnā€™t worked out in midfield which is disappointing given that he does so much good work for Crusheen hereā€¦

So all in all the team could well be:

Brennan/Kelly
McMahon-Dillon-GOG
James Mac-Bugler-Donnellan
Clancy-BOC
Conlon-Diarmuid-Carmody
Ryan-Griffin-Gilligan

Conlon? Seems like a Limerick name. Where is he from?

Colin Ryan has been hyped since he was 16 but is he a major improvement on Mark Flaherty? Griffin will definitely not be at full forward or if he has regressed to the level of a ball winner its pretty sad. A few years ago when Clare played KK in an All Ireland semi he was class. One of the best performances from a Clare forward that I can remember.

It seems like a shockingly slow forward line. James Mac is nothing but a stopper unfortunately and I love seeing new lads getting a chance but he hardly has the hands or striking for wing back. I thought Pat Donnellan had a shocker in the Munster final, so many times blocked down, hooked, mis placed handpasses etc caused big trouble. Might just have been nerves but Ben Oā€™ Connor tore him a new one in the second half against Cork last year aswell. Did you not say that Eddie Brennan destroyed young McMahon last week. I would have serious worries but sure they may improve. Is Barry Nugent not an option at full forward. He can score at least.

Unfortunately the cycle and the year and a half away from hurling has left tony a shadow of his former self, which is an awful shameā€¦Ryan is a bit light but is much more game and quicker than Flaherty and I would have a bit more faith in himā€¦

James mac is much more than a stopper KIB, trust me on that, his grip is poor as I stated but he is a great reader of a game and attacks the ballā€¦As regards Donellan, in fairness Ben O Conner has roasted most of the wing backs in tha game at the minuteā€¦

Never said anything about Brennan roasting Conor Mac, twould have been hard given that Brennan was centre forward for most of the matchā€¦I said that Paul Kelly roasted Vaughan alright before McMahon came on and steadied the shipā€¦

I donā€™t know about these positive vibes about our backline. As Iā€™ve said before we managed an average of 2-18 in our four championship outings last year but our backs buckled every time the opposition upped the intensity. I havenā€™t seen any evidence to suggest theyā€™ve improved this year and the Cork game was an unfortunate reminder that the same problems remain. One of Corkā€™s crucial comeback points came from a Cork forward who had been left in forty yards of space in true Gerry Quinn fashion despite the ball he collected coming from a free.

The one thing you might take hope in is that it appears to be a mentality issue rather than an issue of ability, in that Bugler and Donnellan for example are very good hurlers but poor defenders. Against that though, this team lacked the level of legitimate aggression that we would expect in a Clare team last season, and despite this being recognised fairly generally there was and is no noticable improvement in that regard.

Iā€™d agree that Clare will improve dramatically between the end of the league and our championship opener, but hanging our hat on 6 weeks of hard training is serious wing and a prayer stuff.

I would agree with most of thatā€¦I am not for one minute saying that this Clare team is going to be competing for liam in September, but as far as I am concerned there is very little between the 5 teams in Munster, none of them are particularly outstanding and on any given day anyone could beat the other, I reckon that our lads will be absolutely jumping out of their skin come the 21st of June, just like they were at the start of june(granted Waterford were bad that day) and we will give a good account of ourselvesā€¦

I dont know, I would be too confident of our defence being able to hold a full forward line of the Kellys and Lar Corbett for example. There is little physical power in our defence and none of them strike me as being particularly good man markers.

I see Tipp have dropped Brendan Cummins, nine balls have passed him in the last two matches,is this Gleeson guy any good?,isnt Portroe Liam Sheedys club?

Havenā€™t seen him hurl but according to my north tipp sources he is a fine goalkeeper alrightā€¦Would be rated higher than Gerry Kenndeyā€¦I am surprised that Matthew Ryan of Templederry isnā€™t on the panel, a superb young goalkeeperā€¦

Kennedy is lacking something just yet, not quite sure what it is though, maybe its confidence. A keeper needs time in goal though, you have to train your concentration levels to the higher standard.

Dam well i tell ya. Thats an All-Ireland winning team.

And they are missing J.J, Cha and Noel Hickey with the likes of Comerford and Richie Hogan warming the bench

Scary, but even missing those brilliant players, that team would be very hot favourites for any game.
Its almost a battle for being the 2nd best team in Ireland at this stage.

Bit of a schmozzle in the Galway and Tipp matchā€¦a few of the players nearly ended up in the stand

Half time Clare 10 Dublin 8ā€¦Clare seem to be going well, a bit of fire in the belly, McCrabbe seems to be keeping the Dubs in itā€¦Caimin Morey yellow carded, Gilli on for himā€¦

Biggest beating in the history of Cork hurling today?

Nice to see someone else getting a hammering from the cats today

and you wouldnā€™t see a bunch of lads more deserving of it, bravo to the cats, true gaels one and all

Cork didnā€™t need six months of training to get that close to them though.
