Was Vidal wrong? The US was and still is a quasi-police state. Some strange people like that sort of thing, I can’t for the life of me imagine why anybody would want to live in a police state.

You’re sort of right about Buckley not defending police brutality. He doesn’t even admit it. While vilifying the act of peaceful protest as “provocative”.
