No I disagree. I donât think Tipp were at much that year and Kilkenny felt like they needed a year off.
Maybe Tipp underachieved but I think some people get carried away with how good certain Tipp players (particularly their forwards) actually are. They were wildly inconsistent, and some were serious downhill runners. When the chips were down in 2015, only Callanan really stood up. A lot of the other lads who often get lauded on here went missing.
Kilkennyâs flair lads had way more steel about them.
And the depth of the era was not good. Outside of Kk and Tipp, there was very little else
In that era, they lost twice to Limerick I think (13 and 14). 13 was a poor one. 14 turned out relatively inconsequential and would have arguably been a win if jesus freak Kieran Bergin didnât fist pump his way towards someoneâs balls after winning a free
There seems to be a woeful neediness in the Tippos to be recognised as a great team.
They were a fine team in that era, but were flaky, inconsistent and prone to downing tools regularly. Lovely hurlers, but far from a great team. Had the tools to be one alright, but didnât consistently deliver.
As a complete neutral thatâs simply not true. Limerick lost a Munster final in 2014 to a Cork team who Tipp subsequently pummelled. Tipp were in the doldrums in the pub after losing to Limerick in Munster but roused themselves to have a crack at the backdoor.
Looking back on that team, Paudie Maher was criticised for his reckless tackle on Michael Rice that time but Tipp would have won more had they done more of this.
The Limericks and KK lowered the blade when they needed. Tipp never really did.
