Had to find this out myself in the last few weeks. Just make sure you bring both passports.

Looks like I am. You only need to return it if it has over a year left on it.
If your current passport has more than 12 months validity at the time of your renewal application, you will have to send the original passport by post
They return it then with corners cut off.

Have had difficulties with us border control previously. Visa helps avoid a repeat of them.

After getting the boysâ mugshots, doing the first online bit, printing up the stuff that needed to be signed by the guards in our presence etc etc, I got the applications posted off in the last month of June. We received both passports back this week (Wednesday for one and the second today quite randomly, despite linking the applications). Itâs gas that, because the service has been so shit and all the publicity that went with it, I was hugely impressed by the 1-month turnaround.
