The saddest thing about last nights result is that it confirms beyond any doubt that we wonât be at the 2022 World Cup so our absence from the tournament will extend to 24 years at the very least. Christ but the 2002 World Cup was some experience when youâre a youngster new to the game. The early rise for the Cameroon game and watching the Germany match on TV in school. The future looked bright after that titanic tussle with Spain in the knockouts.
Weâll come again though. Best cohort of 19-22 year olds weâve had in quite some time.

We couldâve won that tournament. Should have.
Great achievement to make the final 8 and come so close to a last 4 appearance. There must have been far less teams in qualifying back in those days before the break up of the Soviet Union.
Quality teams. Iirc we missed an absolute sitter against Russia which would have put us 2-0 up and through. Instead we needed to beat the Dutch, and we so nearly did.

We were better last night than we were in Russia. We didnât make a chance all through that game but Russia didnât have Ronaldo.
You canât push that narrative. Trap was a genius apparently.
Mr Trapoattoni was not a genius . No sportspeople are tbh .
He was a proven manager with an excellent cv who took over a mid ranking international team that was easy to beat . He looked at the talent available and came up with a game plan that made us hard to beat .
He was a pragmatic sensible coach
