I wonder if this will push up the price of all booze - if the entry level for the plonk is a minimum will all wine above that go up accordingly given price elasticity.

Newry is about to get a Booze dividend either way.

Were they not waiting on the North to bring it in too?

They were but have decided to plough ahead now.

Far from set in stone, massive push from the Supermarkets and petrol stations against this. The solicitors lobbying against any insurance reform is building up a head of steam too

Solidarity?

Over the past 14 months the VFI has sought to maintain a high level of solidarity among all sections within hospitality, to present as united a front as possible to government. Itā€™s fair to say that at times this was a challenge.

In that respect it was disappointing to see a trade association attempting to distance itself from the pub sector while also making negative comments about our trade.

I refer to an interview in the Mail on Sunday where the Restaurant Association took exception to the Government decision to open pubs and restaurants together. Its chief executive referred to the decision as being ā€œlumped in with pubsā€. Quite a slur on pubs. At the same time the RAI were lamenting the fact that we ā€œare not all in this togetherā€. Quite a contradiction, considering what happened last summer when traditional pubs were forced to remain shut.

One couldnā€™t help but notice that until very recently the RAI always referenced ā€œrestaurants and gastro pubsā€ in their demands but, suddenly, that term is dropped for ā€œindependent restaurantsā€. It appears the RAI is positive towards pubs when seeking subscriptions but happy to cast aspersions when it suits.

There is plenty of talk at present about reform of licensing laws. You should be aware the RAI are trying to further attack the pub sector by seeking a liberalisation of the laws to allow for licensed cafƩ bars and greater freedom for restaurants to serve alcohol.

The pub sector is more than willing to play its part in the safe re-opening of the hospitality sector, but itā€™s unfortunate that any one part of the industry would attempt to demonise another part of the sector. We could, but will not, go down that road.

Will there be time limits do you think ?

A liberalisation of licensing laws if it included longer or more flexible opening hours would not be a bad thing to encourage people back out.

I have no idea to be honest. They will probably have to throw the zero covid/anti pub psychopaths on Nphet some kind of a bone to keep them happy, all we know for sure really is the 9euro meal is gone
