A certain percentage will continue to smoke regardless and society will still have to bear the cost of their health care when they get sick. So on balance it’s better to have a product that delivers nicotine without carcinogens.
Vaping is just sad really, people have so little willpower that they’re prepared to look like gobshites in public with giant plumes of smoke around them

I’d have a few smokes when I’m drinking. The price of them is enough to turn me off them. I’m not a quitter that’s my problem.
How much money are smokers worth to the government through tax? I will answer that for you far far more than any health care they would require through smoking related illness.
Tax revenue from cigarettes doesn’t come close to covering the cost of smoking related illnesses. Doubling or tripling the cost of a pack of cigarettes is entirely appropriate, and put all the added revenue into cancer care.
So someone who has smoked 30-40 years just say even 20 cigarettes a day gets cancer at say 52 years of age, they wont have covered their costs through tax already? Get a calculator.
Do you know how much cancer treatment for say three years cost? Start there.

Doesn’t matter whether they’ve paid for treatment or not. Have you ever watched someone dying of lung cancer? They’d pay 100 times what they paid in tax not to have cancer.

You’re argument is that an individual smoker pays for the cost of their future health care via taxes they pay on cigarettes.
What do you think the (actual) cost today is of treating a lung cancer patient? Keeping in mind treatment continues to advance and people are living longer thanks to said treatment.

The NHS have carried out full and proper surveys on this exact subject (unsurprising our own crowd are too inept) the annual costs of treating smoking related illness is anywhere between 2-6 billion, the tax and excise duty that smokers contribute in return is 12 billion.
12 billion annually? That’s heroic levels of smoking.
