That is a good point. Football changed significantly in the early 90s as the free-kick and sideline rules made for a faster game. It changed again in the early to mid 2000s as Tyrone led the way to a team pressure game.

I love how Canavan is being thrown up as the bench mark. Where was Canavan in 97,98,99 when Tyrone did fuck all in Ulster? Did he even score from play in those games they lost to Down and Derry? 2000 he didnt even score at all losing to Armagh. 2001 did fuck all when they did beat Armagh, and did even less when they beat Derry and then Cavan winning Ulster. Didnt score at all when Derry beat them in the quarters. 2002, did nothing in Ulster. Scored a good few points against Sligo in the qualifiers alright, even though Tyrone lost to them.

Obviously had a great 2003, but this notion of Gooch not matching Canavan or being there when it counts is stuff of fantasy. Do we conveniently just forget all of Canavans bad years and very little returns?

Who is to say that if the likes of Mick O’Connell, Christy Ring, Mick Mackey etc. Had access to the same type of facilities training programmes, diets and all that stuff that they wouldn’t still be right up there. Previously you referred to the fact that he disappeared because he didn’t make a big score to turn the game and scored mostly from play.
