Retiring GAA Stars tribute thread - May cause brain/neck damage

Might just be his uncle who was popular.

Funny that arguably the two best full forwards to burst on the scene around the early 2000’s have had their careers ruined by injuries, the other being (Ronan Clarke).[/QUOTE]

What are you grinning about, pal?

You made a funny there.

How so?

You made me laugh out loudly.

Too much of a shitbag to explain what you found funny or engage in a serious debate I see.

Clarke had two all stars, a young footballer of the year and an All Ireland to his name at 26. He also missed a season with a cruciate injury during that time and he’s barely played since 2008 due to a number of bad injuries. He was arguably the best forward in the game before his succession of injuries. Only an idiot would think that Clarke wasn’t one of the top forwards in the game during that time. Has Meehan even won an All Star?

Clarke was more talented than for example, Donaghy. That doesn’t make him great, but the fact that he was on a winning A/I team elevates his standing.
O’Gara is cast in the same mould (almost). None of the aforementioned would have the class, ability or overall contributitive impact of Meehan.
Throw any of the trio up front with, say useless cunts like Roscommon, they’d shit themselves. Meehan would drag others up to mediocraty at least, as he’s shown.

Case closed.

Meehan was a brilliant footballer whose Senior I/C career was unfortunately destroyed by injury. Still gave the individual performance of the decade on a losing team against Kerry in 2008.

Still though he has a fine collection of medals to his name (AI Club with Caltra , Schools AI with Jarlaths and underage achievements with Galway)

Nonsense, Clarke was a class act.

Absolutely. You are spot on.
Donaghy is greatly over rated in a general sense and is the best example if a guy who relied on others an in fact a particular few others as well, Galvin, Daragh & Tomas O Se and Sean O Sullivan in particular. He wouldn’t carry anyone, as has been exposed in recent times.

Meehan was almost a one man show some days, he wasn’t even always getting “his type of ball”, he had to break his bollix to get ball if PJ wasn’t kicking it in.

Was at the game where Meehan got really crocked. It was in Pearse in the league against Kerry, Joe Kernan was in charge and he got stretchered off after scoring an outstanding do or die type goal inside the square where most forwards wouldn’t have had near the courage to go for it. Only just back from injury he still went for it and his already fragile ankle might as well have been made of water afterwards. The Kerry keeper did nothing wrong, black cards and such would have made fookall difference, it was just one of those things. Watching him after it and talking to heads since it’s clear that one way or another he would never be the same player again. To be honest, unless he wants to walk around on crutches for the rest of his days his retirement is long overdue.

He still got that goal though.

Doyle was an excellent footballer, there were times when he was the only decent forward Kildare had. Something not right in that panel with the timing of this announcement now, not sure if Jason Ryan is actually a bit of a bluffer or not.

Good luck to John Doyle.

Disgusting to see Doyle cut the Kildare team loose now that the bad times are here and they need him most. He’s a bad 'un that one.

I don’t think Johnny Doyle was ever near a great but he was consistently good for a long time and that is to his credit.

Strange that he should decide to go now though.

Johnny Doyle owes nobody anything.*

*I’ve no idea if he got involved in failed property deals or anything like that.

Word around Allenwood is that Johnny knew he wasn’t going to get a start so did the honourable thing.
