It’s great to have the culture back.

Went to see Gabriel Byrnes show last night with the missus. Absolute gash. Twee shite contrived for Yanks, being finetuned on us. Wannabe Frank McCourt.

Too many ‘TNH’s’ to count.

Monday night is always a tricky night with the theatre in Dublin but I was going to the match yesterday so I didn’t want to be rushing back and it was only a two night run. So I took my chances and got my ticket for the night knowing that because ticket sales are often poor on a Monday they give unsold tickets on the cheap to homes for the bewildered.

Sure enough my seat for the songs of Leonard Cohen was directly in front of the biggest cunt in the auditorium. I didn’t want to say anything for fear that he had Tourette’s or dementia and the woman who he was with - who I assumed was his carer might get embarrassed. He sang along tunelessly to all of the songs and loudly. Resisted all suggestions to sshh. “Are you fucking serious” was his response (in a Northern accent). Then the poetry bit came on and I thought I’ll get a break here but no he knew all the words Of the poems as well.

I resolved to move at the interval, which I did, and from my new vantage point I observed him moving back into his seat and I performed an on the spot diagnosis. He was blinding staggering drunk. So was his wife. Although I couldn’t hear him, I could see him during the rest of the show giving one man standing ovations after every song.

The show itself was very enjoyable. Moncrieff even though he has one of those over emoting voices that I don’t like has a great set of pipes. Jack L is a fine singer. There was a luvvie element to the thing that was occasionally annoying, Leonard was a great friend etc etc etc. on the whole though worth catching if it comes around again.

My my. The horror. Sure what would you expect? And you all set, a perfectly good packet of murray mints bought and paid for

I thought it might have been yourself but then I realised you’d never be at a Leonard Cohen gig.

Theatre festival is upon us. Went to ‘Whistle in the Dark’ tonight. It’s a super play, it really is. Buuuut i was disappointed. Peter Coonan (fran) was excellent but i thought both Brian Gleeson and surprisingly Sean McGinley left it out there. Id mostly blame it on the director actually, Jason Byrne but the show very much didnt add up to the sum of its parts.

That’s a fair cast. Where was it on?

Is that Jason Byrne the comedian as director?
