On in the peacock. Nope, different lad.
Tom Murphy is one of the greats.
fixed
Saw Hamilton recently. Wouldn’t be into hippity hoppity or anything like it but thought it was an outstanding production. 2 hours '45 zipped by. 9/10
Thomas Jefferson the standout for me.
Solar Bones there tonight in the Abbey. Very faithful adaptation of the book which I liked very much. In fact it might as well have been a reading of the book. I enjoyed it but if you hadn’t read the book you might have been slightly lost. Stanley Townsend was excellent in the only role but he made a couple of slips. I suppose it can’t be easy to remember 100 minutes of dialogue with no cues. Reasonably full house with a lot of Covid masks and other cunts coughing like fuck.
Sitting down for the matinee of To Kill a Mockingbird, Matthew Modine as Atticus Finch. Aaron Sorkin/Sher Bartlett production. Don’t know if Modine actually does the early shows
Superb. Modine is a very authentic Finch
That sounds class. Modine seems a very likeable sort
Piaf in the Gate. Surprisingly linear biographical telling of the great chanteuses life and troubles. Camille O Sullivan and Zara Devlin are wonderful in the roles of the old and young Piaf. Young Devlin in particular has a great set of pipes.
Going in a couple of weeks. Nice one.
It’s a bit crude in parts. Warn the missus in case her sensibilities are easily offended.
Tina Turner in the west end tonight, absolutely unreal, the crowd were on their feet going mental for the crescendo, reminded me of a rave in the mid 90’s, electric
Went to this tonight. Absolutely buzzing after it. Brilliant direction and production. Very stylish too. O Sullivan must be on epo such is her tour de france. Id go again tomorrow if i could.*
*I can’t, I’m off to Damo in the Abbey.
I went to see the great man in Tales from the Holywell on Monday. Very enjoyable stuff. He is a very good story teller with excellent comic timing which i was not expecting.
Cabaret tonight. Kitkat club. Absolutely unbelievable
Went to Gold in the Water at the project last weekend and the New electric ballroom in the gate last night.
Gold in the Water.
A gay family musical. A lovely and surprisingly big production (8 actors/4 musicians). A modern musical that had buckets of soul and some fantastic comedy. It held both our kids throughout, which was incredible for a show about 2 hours 20. Definitely in need of an editor and possibly a better composer but it left the entire audience buzzing. A feelgood romp of sillyness that I’d highly recommend if it comes back.
The New Electric ballroom.
I’d a full day yesterday and found myself almost dreading going into this last night on the way in from the suburbs in the non ev car. Myself and the brother both felt like we’d skip it for a few handy pints if we could be we couldnt, so we went. Anyone familiar with Walshs plays will know the intensity involved, and so it was from the start. Curtajn up and a sustained high intensity rant from the incredible Barbara Brennan up stage with another character shouting at her. I honestly felt like i couldn’t deal with it. But i love Walsh’s plays and so, wrapped in weirdness and his beloved semi-purgatory feel, the play unleashes a high octane romp through the past lives of 2 oul spinsters in a small country town. Hilarious, passionate, insane, hyper. Utter madness. Marty Rea is brilliant, hilarious and heart warming. The Brennan sisters are fantastic. Warped oul ones struggling to live with their past. If you like Walsh, you should definitely see this production. If you think theatre is a bit slow and posh you should see this. If you are from the country you should see this.
My only criticism might be the characterisation of the 2 older women a little bit but this production is fantastic. An advertisement for what theatre can be.
I’m off to see Hangmen tonight in the Gaiety.
cheers mate
Enjoyed this. Entertaining. Intense. Dark subject matter but lots of laughs. Well staged. Some dodgy Northern English accents but overall decent performances.
Recommended if you like McDonagh’s stuff.
