The reason a lot of politicians voted for the Iraq War is that they were presented with evidence that was fraudulent. I think they should have had the wit and the cop on to realise that it was fraudulent, because it was already obvious by 2001 that the Republican party was an out of control lunatic asylum, and it was obvious from soon after 9/11 that Bush and the neo-cons wanted a war against Iraq, but these politicians were presented with evidence nonetheless, so there is at least some excuse for them.
Plus, fraudulent and obscene and immoral as the war was, it was not like the US was invading a free democracy or trying to erase a country and a people, but going to war against one of the worst regimes on earth, a regime which gassed the Kurds to death and slaughtered the Shia and made everyday life a misery. Neither did America âkill a million peopleâ in Iraq, the actual number they killed was a tiny fraction of that. Fanatics in Iraq were more than capable of butchering each other and civilians. The neo-cons either didnât realise this because they were simpletons who genuinely believed that a market-based democracy was an infallible cure for all trouble (Perle), or didnât care (the rest of them).
The Iraq War was an immoral, obscene fraud. Russiaâs war against Ukraine is far, far worse. And plenty of those who vocally opposed the war in Iraq have now demonstrated that they were never actually opposed to war at all, but merely opposed to American led war. Russian led imperial slaughter and the attempt to erase a country and genocide an entire people is just fine in their eyes.
