Sandy Lyle?
I presume McGinleyâs price had drifted a nice bit with Monty showed interest first, before the players rowed in?
What is McGinleys best ever finish in a major? Was he ever in contention going into the back 9 of a major?
Record in Majors
Summary
Starts â 27

2nd place finishes â 0
3rd place finishes â 0
Top 3 finishes â 0
Top 5 finishes â 0
Top 10 finishes â 2
Top 25 finishes â 7
Missed cuts â 13
Most consecutive cuts made â 1 (twice)
As Fagan has showed, heâs never contended on the back 9 on the final day. I recall him leading after 36 holes of The British Open in Lytham back in the 1990s but he fell away - think Tom Lehman* won it that year.
Seems like McGinley is a shrewd sort. It was clear the top brass of the European Tour and the main men on the Playersâ Committee didnât want him but he outflanked them without saying anything publicly. I guess the new breed of players - those whoâll be on the team - all strongly supporting him counted in the end and I imagine he had campaigned for their backing.
Itâs gas how much these players seem to dislike Monty.
- he calls himself a man of God.

McGinley sank the winning putt in 2002 Ryder Cup. Thats better than any major win.
Great day for Irish sport once again. First Irish captain of a Ryder cup team who was essentially put in place by the young Irish King maker. Well done Paul, well done Rory.

[/quote]it is in its hole
Yes it did go into the hole
He has never been on a losing Ryder Cup team, sank the winning putt in 2002 and captained GB & I to two Seve trophy victories over Europe. He won the vote unanimously today and has the backing of all the top players in the European team-he is a fantastic choice for Ryder Cup captain.
He would be an absolutely terrible pick if you are looking to back anyone in this yearâs majors.
Howâs McGinleyâs appointment going down on Lockeâs golf forum?
Whatâs Paul McGinley ever done?
Paul McGinleyâs Gaelic Football background was clearly the telling factor that swayed the vote in his favour. I donât imagine that any of the former captains had any experience of playing team sports in their formative years.
Thatâs what he said on the news this morning, that it was all down to his GAA background.
Well I canât imagine Mrs Saggytits running around after a football anyway. Ballyboden have just won the Ryder Cup for Europe.
Surely big Colin played a bit of field hockey or rugby football while growing up in Ayrshire.
Aine Lawlor reckoned it was invaluable recognition for the GAA and was just what the people of Ireland needed to cheer themselves up on a dreary January morning.

It probably cheered simpletons like faldo up no end.
Brian Carthy will have been delighted at this reassurance that the GAA is great.
