Contrast: Ireland, high expectations, best squad ever, blah blah blah. Played shit boring uninspiring rugby and were made to look shit by a team they were expected to beat. Underachieved. Scotland: also rans coming into the tournament, played thrilling positive rugby, achieved beyond expectations. Certainly Scotland can be more pleased with their level of performance than Ireland.
The story of that tournament was that teams that played positive attacking rugby, eg Scotland, Argentina, and Japan, lit up the tournament and did better than expected. Turgid conservative teams of limited ambition like Ireland, England, France, did worse than expected.

You are basing all the above nonsense on a disliking of Schmidt.
Ireland definitely underperformed and did not match up to expectations. But apparently a team going out & throwing it around with shit results previously are doing something right.
Irelandās boring conservative approach in style and selection was exposed at the World Cup. Schmidt got it badly wrong.
By comparison, teams that played with ambition overachieved.

Scotland lost 34-16 to South Africa in the group stages and scrapped into the quarter final courtesy of a 3 point win over an already eliminated Samoa.
Ireland won their group winning all four games. It was such a shame we had to play Argentina with such a weakened team - Jonny Sexton, Paul OāConnell, Peter OāMahony and Sean OāBrien all absent. A full or close to full strength Ireland would have made it to the final of that tournament.

Scotland beat Japan who were playing 2nd game in a few days having just beat SA, theay beat USA and scrapes past Samoa. They were beaten well by a rubbish SA side.
They overperformed in defeat against Australia. How often have the Scots performed great but still lost. Plenty.
Big fan of the Scots style of play but back up the fucking truck a bit about how good they were at last RWC. They were distinctly average
