So, who's striking today? Which Side are You On

A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.

But are train drivers already overpaid?

They are also using the general public who rely on their transport as a hostage to get their demands. I think that’s crass.

Mike I think is living in a communist country or something.

So if one person gets a pay cut that’s means everyone in the country gets one?

The problem is that the cost of living in the country is too high and the politicians are not doing anything about it to bring it down. Companies don’t want to pay the wages that are needed to keep a roof over your head. For me it is up to the wasters in Leinster house to get their act together and look at reducing the cost of living in the country. Then maybe reduction in wage bills is possible.

Who said that? The salary scale is decent enough capared with other EU countries and the infrastructure needs massive investment. I’d rather they stayed with what they have so that passenger safety can be guaranteed

They are just one day stoppages over a few weeks. No big deal, now if it was a 5 days in a row then I could see the argument. The days have been flagged well in advance and people can make alternative arrangements.

What are they suppose to do when they go on strike? Still provide the trains.

Not go on strike, not use the public as a hostage.

You can’t have it both ways taz. When the cost of living dropped during 2009-2014 their wages stayed static, exclusive of increments, but now the country is picking up but the company is insolvent they want more money

They said they didn’t want to cause disruption to the public but then chose the days they could do the most disruption

Yes, if they wanted they could continue to provide the intercity trains as normal but let the public know they do not have to pay for the DART as there will be no inspectors and gates at either end will be left opened by IR staff. Now you have the same outcome, i.e. IR losing money, without pissing off the public and they could do it every day until the dispute is resolved, escalating the issue quicker.

Ah come on, do you really think that the management in Irish rail would really the let workers come in and drive the trains but not take any fares. That’s just fucking nuts, what would happen with your suggestion is that there would be a lock out simple as that. There is no way in the world that the management would let the trains run under those conditions.

Then it’s spun on the management.

Why don’t the train drivers apply for other jobs?

Transport strikes are always going to cause disruption. Whats on today that is going to cause massive disruption?

Then Irish rail are the bad guys, a PR victory for the drivers.

Some people have to go to work mate. Why not do it on a Saturday or Sunday?

But its not just the train drivers. It is all Irish Rail unionised staff. The trains not running are consequence of the whole company being on strike.

As for applying for other jobs, maybe they have applied for Luas driver jobs, Who knows?

Why don’t they apply for other jobs?

That’s what I’d do? Maybe they realise they are getting paid over their market worth and this is just a stunt for them to get even more?

Yes many people suffered pay cuts during the recession, both in the public and private sector. Irish Rail workers didn’t have to suffer any cuts to their gross pay. Should they not be grateful for this rather than playing the “poor me” card and going on strike.

Art turned into a right Tory as soon as he got that promotion.

What effect will pay increases have on the cost of living in this country?

Are there any leftist Tories?
