Suicide

Life assurance companies didn’t pay out in the past in the case of suicide. Not sure if that is the case at the moment.

Heard a coroner on the radio one day commenting on the number of single car crashes where the driver had no alcohol or drugs in their system and no evidence of a seat belt being worn. Reading between the lines was easy according to him. Much easier on the family to say their son/husband died in an accident rather than they took their own life.

There was a town in Wales a few years back where a large number of youths did this because of the tribute bebo pages that shot up for those that had died. Fucked up.

This is another thing that bugs me, these fucking tribute pages on FB.

On the life assurance thing, its dealt with on a case by case basis as far as I know. I’ve heard of cases of payment, and refusal to pay, so all depends on circumstances, underwriter, assessor, length of policy etc I would guess.

Malcolm Gladwell has a very interesting piece on teen suicide clusters in the Tipping Point.

The excellent Harry Barry, already mentioned on this thread, says that suicide is the transfer of pain from the person who had died to his/her loved ones. Interesting way of looking at it.

EDIT: I think it was actually the Tonights TV thread where he was mentioned.

I think some people’s (not all) use of Facebook and twitter shows their dangerously insatiable appetit for attention…its just not healthy…

Harry Barry?

Maybe now our government will treat this subject with the seriousness it deserves.

RIP Shane MacAntee. I can only imagine the pain the man was in to leave a wife and kids behind him. God help them.

It was a suicide?

Jesus it cant be true surely?

It appears Titch has spread a completely unfounded rumour onto this fine forum.

apparently this is true, another suicide

The lack of detail in the news report would certainly indicate that

I wish it were unfounded Flano. The usual unnecessary taboo around suicide has kept it out of the media I suppose.

Maybe I am premature with the post but maybe it will now dawn on our ruling classes that mental health services in this country needs a major rethink.

Yeah. No mention of the cause of death just ‘found dead’, ‘died suddenly’

well if it was suicide why don’t the media report it as such, it happened this morning. They weren’t shy about announcing the young girl’s death.
this is typical of this fucking country

Apparently went out counting the cattle, came home and topped himself, another victim of the silent killer in the country, another apparent victim of the mental torture that is depression, God Rest his soul.

it was only a week or so ago the man was rightly guffawed out of it as a gombeen fat cat politician when he made some tasteless quip about the annual grant for respite care being enough for a stay in a 5* hotel.
if he has committed suicide then it may be a seminal moment for this government and indeed the future direction of the country under this government.
terrible for his family i feel for them

Yes it was.

that is 3 I have seen second hand in the past 10 days known well to people I know all for similar reasons.

ironically it is the government which sat on its hands that has to act on the underlying issues.
