take that back you bastard, you seem to have pretty serious issues, i hope you arent taking it out on any family members, the west of ireland would do that to a fella i suppose
I was reading a very sad story there about a chip assembly plant in north eastern china that has a very high suicide rate, its the kind of place where the people work 15 hours a day for a few dollars and live during the week in dormitories adjacent to the factory. anyway instead of trying to root cause the issues the chineese dept of labour requested the organsisation hang nets around the building to catch people who are jumping to their death⌠the suicide rate has reduced, a well known american multinational who uses this facility are doing their utmost to have the stories pulled off google

5 years on from this thread being started and while progress has been made itâs still so hard to accept that some people canât get the necessary help to stop them taking the ultimate decision. I suppose the harsh reality is that some may well be able to avail of services but their minds are so far gone that the decision is made and nothing will stop them. Thatâs what I really struggle to get my head around. Having dealt with family members suffering with depression I think itâs often understated how much it can completely take over someoneâs body and mind.
In recent times weâve lost a politician to suicide, an Olympic boxer, a very well known chef had lost his son but covered it up. And now an intercounty GAA player. How long will suicide remain a taboo topic and how long before people realise mental health is a serious issue? Iâm fucking sick of it to be honest. Times like this make you want to just jack your job in and go work for free for the likes of Pieta House or Console. At least theyâre trying to do something about it, although mostly reactive. How the hell can this be stopped?
Sorry if itâs a bit raw at the moment given whatâs just happened.
Feeling the same right now, Macintosh. I donât have any real answers except to say that in my own experience, after once feeling like walking out in front of a bus, I went to counselling and found it really beneficial. So, itâs good to talk.
And sure people donât talk about their feelings. Happy people donât want to know your problems which you might impart on them after a few pints. You need someone who is being paid just to fucking listen to you. Which is kinda shitty.
In my work a woman went off sick with depression. Another lad often goes sick too. They both have certified doctorâs notes for it. And itâs kind of a joke in the office. Which is even more shitty.

Properly resourced schools have a huge role to play in suicide prevention. I work in a fee paying school and have taught many lads who have being diagnosed with mental disorders, some of whom are clinically depressed. I shudder to think what would have happened to many of these if they did not have access to school chaplains, guidance counselor etc.
Kids need to be able to talk to trusted individuals. Getting schools to normalise this sort of communication is key and lads are more likely to seek out similar intervention once they leave school, provided these are available.
