My suspicion is that its as much time constraint and fatigue on the part of the medics. Damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. If the state instead of protecting the rich, provided accessible counselling/ CBT I have no doubt it would be the first port of call. If the patient cannot access this, it’s hard for a family doctor. If anything happens to the patient, people will be lining up to ask why they weren’t on treatment which has been statistically proven** to work.

Agree with most of this. The system sets up the GP as the gateway to all healthcare. They are quite well trained in fairness (at lest 9 years I think) but they are essentially a jack of all trades and have 10-15 minutes to make serious decisions with barely any insight into the specific patient’s condition. If somebody comes in with symptoms of depression, they probably know that counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, etc. could be very beneficial but realistically the public patient isn’t going to be able to access this very quickly. Prescribing an antidepressant is an easy quick fix to cover themselves and hopefully give a bit of a quick fix to the patient.

The choice of the mother above to bring her son, diagnosed with depression, to join a gun club beggars belief.

I agree with that 100% apart from the last line.

The thing with mental health issues in my view is that often there is fuck all anyone can do. That brings unfair expectations that a GP or whoever can cure you from depression in a couple of days and when it doesn’t happen then frustration grows and increases the original depression.

But the psychiatrist profession puzzles me. If the mental health issue cannot be ‘cured’ by medication (as is the case with many), then they are useless. In fact they can do more harm than good in many cases attempting to introduce powerful meds into the scenario. Also their decisions as to what medication to put someone on is completely trial and error and nothing to do with any type of medical expertise in terms of a best fit.

The real scary thing about mental health issues in my view is that once something like depression hits, there can be absolutely nothing which the medical profession can do depending on the nature of it. In the case of the elation phase of bi polar, all that can be done is literally locking someone up and pump them full of tranquillizers.
