TFK Winter sports appreciation thread

Lindsey has first place.

Fooking priceless, some French heifer has just fallen over coming out of the gate, commentators on BBC doing all he can not to crack his hole laughing.

Looks all over now
Lindsey best looking burd in the competition and wins the gold as well
Mancuso did well for a slalom skier
That last jump is savage, Anja Pearson was 2 or 3rd favourite and she nearly broke her head there
They will be lighting a few bonfires in Vail tonight

As an aside I;m switching to Eurosport where hopefully they will continue on past bib 30- should be a lot of carnage when the poor skiers get onto the course

Lindsey has taken first place in the Super combined downhill section
Skied beautifully, Mancuso like yesterday is second. Reisch her best friend and big rival on the course now*

*Riesch just finished only .33 down with the slalom to come, the german is favourite now

i put a hundred notes down at 5-2 on the USSR to win the hockey

Reisch won
Mancuso second
Pearson third- fair play after her crash yesterday

Vonn crashed out and had a DNF

Looking like Austria will end their drought here in the Women’s Super G.

Below par effort from Vonn.

A Wexford chap, Pat Shannon, came 25th in the slide down the ice on your belly competition.

Fair play to him:

That’s harsh
She beat what was in front of her only to be overtaken by those coming after.
They had the benefit of excellent reporting on the course- only 5 of the first 10 finished due to half them missing the line off a little roller
Lindsey’s still the golden girl for me

Watching the ski cross final here on bbc. not a bad sport i must say

It’s very entertaining alright. The canadian fella went for broke at the second last turn there and buckled himself. He should have been content with Bronze really

That’s not the spirit though- a Canadian on home turf was never going to settle for a bronze especially in skier cross

On more important news; Bode Miller took gold in the combined. His first gold medal, the world’s best skier finally gets Olympic Gold. A solid downhill followed by a risky slalom was enough for him, he was followed in silver by Ivica Kostelic whose father set the slalom course… (seems we could learn a few tricks from the Croats) and third was Silvan Zubbrigen no relation to the mighty Pirmin who won downhill gold.

Very good game so far between USA and Canada in mens hockey. Usa opened the scoring after just a minute. Canada hit back mid way through the quarter only for the US to rattle one in 22seconds later. Some nice hits going in too

Ice-hockey is a savage sport. Fast paced, serious skill level and plenty of the physical stuff as well.

Ive noticed that alright re the skill level. Havent watched much ice hockey before but will be tuning in for the rest of the olympics. after that who knows <_<

Greetings all

Just back; my feet are still tingling and missing the soft crunch desperately.

The death of Nodar Kumaritashvili has enraged Scandanavia; this is a region that lives and breaths Nordic events and it was the main news item on all the big screens; It was only knocked from being the top Olympic news item by the Swedes “cheating” Norges’ Petter in the Cross Country. The general concensus is that it was avoidable; the pole he hit was unpadded.

Even an interview with Jacques Rogge (one of my heros btw) suggested there would be an investigation on three specifics: quality of facilities, standards of the qualifing rounds and the experience of those athletes qualifying via this qualifiers. And this would define future locations and events.

Over here on the BBC there is a lot of emphasis on the quality of the snow, and it does appear to be shocking that the trees are bare and the punters are in shortsleeves, but that was not mentioned once in Norway last week. Not once.

FYI I walked a semi/ sorta’ Snow Cross run last week, (1200 m, half a dozen jumps, a pipe and a few rails) It is the future.

In 10 years time us mere alpiners will be extinct and confined to the baby slopes.

The Canadians are having a nightmare of a games.

What where the odds.

Not really

Vonn wasn’t even the fastest qualifying yank, and the seeding proved correct as she was beaten by the faster qualifers.

In fact those Austrians will be around for some time.

USA were 10-3 at face off last night to beat the canadians
