Try the 2000s even.

So the people who didn’t emigrate from Ireland owe refugees from other countries a favour?

yes and you are also forbidding from talking about international protection.

take as many as possible/impossible and that’s the end of it

2 million out of 8 million on the island wasn’t mass emigration?

What?

When we had the famine, 2 million had to leave the country*.

That’s mass emigration.

Read it again. He said the 80s to which i was referring

You’ve misunderstood

America had an open door policy in the 19th century as they needed to kill the rest of the injuns and more overseers on their plantations to whoop black people.

The irish in America were extremely racist… Arguably the most racist of any ethnic group.

We had a high emigration rate in the 1980s, I believe it peaked in 1989. We’ve had a high emigration rate for most of our history. People couldn’t wait to get the fuck out of the place. I referred to the famine because that was a period in our history when we had a similar emigration rate to what is now happening in Ukraine. We were lucky other countries took those Irish people in their time of need.

I genuinely think’s it’s grimly hilarious that any Irish person would complain about migration. It’s one of the main reasons our economy has rebounded strongly from the crash while much of Europe stagnates.

It’s also the main reason we have such cultural cachet internationally.

All these so called “protests” are being whipped up by the usual suspects. They’re professional far right agitators who are pushing the agenda of far right American, British and Russian extremists.

If anybody genuinely doesn’t want any more Ukrainians coming here, they should be urging the collective West to do everything in its power to crush the Russian war machine. That’s why there is so much emigration from Ukraine.

We are not going to stop emigration from elsewhere for all sorts of reasons - war, poverty, lack of freedom, climate destruction.

This will be a century of migration. The world might as well deal with it rather than try and hold back the tide.

Is Mattie Cooper one of the “bad” guys now?

Matt Cooper was always a cunt in fairness.

Again, why are you comparing to AS?

Shutting down any form of discussion on any matter creates extremists.

You may find it “grimly hilarious” the same way i find it grimly idiotic when people say there is no limit to the amount of international protection a state can provide.

Saying take them all and everyone regardless is just as belligerenet as saying take none

anyone looking to talk in the middle gets shouted down by both sets of pricks

Where did I do that? I replied to farmer’s post about Irish people complaining about mass emigration.

You don’t want to “talk in the middle” you want to block Ukrainian refugees from coming to Ireland.

I didn’t shut down anything.

Claiming you are being shut down is a form of shutting down discussion.

Do I think we should not engage with the far right who are spreading propaganda and whipping up hatred for refugees? Yes, I think we should not engage with them. Because they are open fascists who are prepared to lie about anything to whip up naked racist hatred, and because they want a race war.

All European countries should share the burden of refugees as equally as possible. Who argues otherwise?

Ireland has a particular moral and historical obligation to not act the dickhead because of our history of emigration.

Immigration into Ireland over the last 20 years has been very positive for the country.

I do think we need to be careful though with fellas not having any passports coming in. That is something we need to stop. They are putting extra pressure on the system and affecting genuine cases.

Regarding the Ukrainian numbers, we are bound by European law on that so there is no cap. I don’t mind that at all once they’re genuinely from Ukraine. That is fair enough.

Ok mate, you do you.

You’ve taken off on a few different tangents there.

Matt Cooper is being called a fascist for saying there might need to be a temporary halt. that’s what I was referring to.

I’m not getting into any of that other shit with you

if people could read this with an open mind

mass migration is causing massive issues and isn’t being handled, correctly or at all. It’s going to end badly

Who called Matt Cooper a fascist?

Are you imagining stuff?

One thing that never works is debating on the terms the fascists want you to “debate” on. They’re always false terms, and it’s never a debate. History is littered with people who weren’t fascists agreeing to debate on the terms fascists want them to “debate” on.

Philly McMahon can talk some shit about various things but one thing he was spot on about is that people from a community who have spent their lives being negatively judged by others should never judge other people in difficulty.

The instigators of these fascist demonstrations - and that’s what they are - want to divide and rule. They want to pit working class Irish communities against refugees and for there to be riots. To foment widespread chaos and to drum up support for fascism that way. The same they’ve always done it.

What do people who openly want to foment chaos, violence and race wars have to offer society in a positive sense? That’s a rhetorical question.

look at the thread you are in and where his opinion is posted

Anyway, you’ve gone off on another few tangents there and you seem to be getting a bit insulting so carry on there.
