Will reeling in the years survive the cut?

It will until it comes to now and the river has been fished to empty.

Bye bye RTE Gold.

The Government would be well aware. They have their own financial advisors (New Era) who get all key semi state reports.

This is all a game. They need more State money regardless of any proposed cuts. You drip feed to the media until you get what you want.

Heather Humphries is on top of this :joy:

Perhaps she is actually ok at her job, but she always comes across as utterly clueless in interviews.

They should scrap 2FM. It serves no public service mandate anymore.

A look at their financial statements shows it makes as big a loss as Lyric FM. Over €6m of license fee money on a service that Today FM et al provides. They will have to look at RTÉ 2 as well. Their only argument on 2fm is that it reaches a younger audience and that’s part of RTÉ’s remit. That doesn’t hold up in my view. Why should RTÉ have to reach teenagers and 20 somethings playing US and U.K. music, making a huge loss doing it, when the private sector does it? At least with tv you can argue that there are documentaries, sports and other promotional elements that might suck younger people over to more PSB, but 2fm really isn’t. It’s listnership has shrank drastically in 15 years too. Really it should have been sold then when it was worth a fair few Bob.

RTÉ television department are going to be crushed because we are a small country in a media landscape where the means of distribution are becoming more global and the barriers to viewing are coming down and arguably have been down for a decade for tech savvy youngsters. Even the BBC and ITV are coming together because they see what is happening with Netflix’s programming budget. RTÉ needs to stop trying to be the BBC. They can sustain loss making shows on things where there is a limited audience or there is a strong PS interest, otherwise they need to get out. Focus RTÉ 2’s programming budget on improving RTÉ Player and producing several high quality shows annually that you might be able to sell onto the likes of Netflix.

I was surprised to hear that Aertel was still a thing. Is Ceefax gone as well.
