I think they realise its end game. Gavan Reilly has a good thread going on here over the past 9 hours
Basically saying there’s no way back no given the no confidence, and that there’s still things to legislate for, budget, etc, that will most likely see election in New Year at earliest.
Nobody wants an election before Christmas. Varadkar will have to go for a mandate at some stage in 2018. The confidence and supply agreement with FF is for three budgets, of which one remains. The Minister for the Women of Status will be thrown to the wolves. SF have gotten the jump on Fianna Fáil on this one so Meehawl will table his own motion rather than vote for the Shinners one.
The next election will most likely return a similar enough result to the last, with modest gains for both FF and FG at the expense of independents.
They’ve been devoured already and won’t recover this time. What have they? 4 seats off the top of my head - Howlin, Kelly, Burton and Jan O’Sullivan. They’ll likely hold those four but won’t gain any.
Burton just about hung on as did Kelly.
Kelly has probably come on a bit and I would fancy him to hold on. Best they’ve I’ll do is three I’d say.
Gerry pulling out will attract a lot of voters to SF.
I think this is a massive own goal by FF. They have backed themselves into a corner here and may force a GE that the public don’t really want. They could be in for an election backlash. It could actually work out alright for FG. SF are witjout a proven leader. Labour are in freefall and the inds have peaked.
