The Anti Rugby Football Thread Pt 2

Didnā€™t your man David gillick end up in training with the dubs?

Another rugby player after retiring ended up playing with mayo.

Didnā€™t Usain Bolt train with the Red Devils. And have a trial with Borussia Dortmund. He didnā€™t make the grade. And he had bags of pace.

Donā€™t think so.

So China would be considered a world class soccer team? Interestingā€¦

Certainly by some lunatics around here

Trinidad and Tobago made it to a 32 team World Cup.

To fill their squad they randomly searched for lads playing in leagues around the world that qualified via the granny rule.

Great in a rooral centric society when nobody had access to the world.

Things are changing.

And these boys played at a football World Cup.

Yep. You wonā€™t be far off a good rugby standard.

This doesnā€™t mean it is association football, but it is a global game.

They are. Dublin GAA clubs have taken over rugby country and are far far bigger now than any Dublin rugby club. Rugby clubs rent out their pitches to GAA clubs as they have no need for them.

New Zealand had semi pros and managed to make a decent account of themselves in 2010.

Football is a far more global game but it is also one where it is easier to hide deficiencies.

Any statistics to back that up? On a personal level I felt like there was more of a buzz around rugby 10-15 years ago. If any sport has had a bit of a resurgence level at local level in Ireland in recent years Iā€™d say itā€™s soccer.

The big rugby game last year had higher tv figures than the 2 all ireland finals combined

Iā€™d say rugby was close to disappearing five years ago. They destroyed the season and put everything behind pay per view tv but the gaa mangling their season and much more games being on free to air tv has seen a resurgence in interest.

With Limerick playing cork last Saturday I was very surprised to see 20k in Thomond park.

Gga clubs are big on the southside with parents who dont want their kids mixing with non irish

Munster v Leinster could meet again puc or croker in front of a full house in the middle of June.

Mate, you have two clubs of in south east Dublin and maybe a junior club?

This means theyā€™re ā€œlargeā€ but you are miles behind football and rugby in participation and general interest. Donā€™t Kilmacud Crokes have the same catchment as some country teams?

You go into a pub on the southside and you are more likely to find a run of the mill EPL or URC game than a Dublin bogball game.

Weā€™ve about 14 nationalities (born there or parents born there) on our team.

Saw a bit of the kilkenny dubkin game, not many different backgrounds there

Nobody plays egg chasing anymore outside the lads chasing professional contracts.
