The psychological aspects of McGregor’s appeal are very interesting. I think it’s quite similar to the appeal of Trump. The celebration of stupidity for the sake of it. The rejection of empathy and intelligence. The glorification of money and individualism. The trolling aspect to his persona. The fake appeals to his being “a man of the people” while everything about his public persona reinforces a sense of loathing for working class communities. The pathetic, caricatured idea of what masculinity is. He particularly appeals to individuals with low self esteem.

The slow ramp up of pervasive negativity in the western world from the early 2000s on reached a crescendo during the 2010s. Conor McGregor was perceived as the true representation of working class culture. But Conor McGregor was and is a thug who promotes the values of criminality and individualism and pure vulgarity.

The desire to acquire conspicuous wealth with the least effort and least legitimate effort has become a cancer in traditional working class communities. It leads to criminality. Criminality leads to a general culture of drop outism, rejection of society and rejecting anything to do with real knowledge.

He’d be first on my list if we could revoke people’s citizenship. It’s sad, when I inform a Swede under 30 that my nationality is Irish, they say, ‘Ah, Conor McGregor’. When I inform the over 30’s, it’s not unusual to be met with, ‘I hope you’re not part of those tarmaccing and roofing scam Irish people’. It’s sad that the quality of citizen we now export sullies our reputation to this degree. I remember living in the U.S and the Irish nationality carrying weight, then in Australia as a contrast, being viewed as borderline scum. With time, I could see and read the behavior of our emigrants earning the rep.

I think @Cheasty goes over the top with things at times, and is often times as bad for conspiracy theories as the right wing nuts, BUT, is it a coincidence that here’s another person with clear, established links to Putin stirring up far right sentiment in a western democracy?
