What does common, distinction etc mean in relation to honours, pass, a, b, c of our day?

I didnt realise they changed ordinary level to common level.

Common level is a bit of grim way of putting it.

Thereā€™s only higher or ordinary in the three core subjects, the rest are ā€˜commonā€™

Junior Cert was just A, B, C etc I thought. Only leaving cert had A1, A2 etc.

It was called the Inter in my day.
