I made the grave mistake back in September of scribbling my name & number down on a sheet of paper that was passed around at an induction meeting for parents/guardians of the junior infants class. The resulting WhatsApp group is hopping on an ongoing basis, even more so since last night when the topic of a group present/voucher for the teacher for Christmas was raised. Some people be absolutely crazy. One woman just took charge & decided herself on the amount (€5 per child which seemed awfully stingy to me), the present (gift voucher) & sent her Revolut details around. Others then setting up polls in parallel about whether a group gift or individual gift would be better. Others querying whether the amount is enough & should we get something instead of a voucher. Others saying we should give what we like under no obligation to be higher or lower than €5. Others coming back saying €5 isn’t much but some people have several children & it all adds up. Others saying we should include the SNA & get her a gift too. Others saying they’re not on Revolut & what would they do. And on & on we go.

ChatGPT has entered the process. A Christmas poem mentioning all the boys by name has been produced & will be attached to the cards. We will not tell teacher it’s not our own work.

This is more of a mumsnet post but I can highly recommend Paultons Park outside of Southampton if you want an easy break away with the kids. Paultons has the only Peppa Pig Land in the UK - our youngest is obsessed with Peppa but hopefully is growing out of that phase. Its kinda like Tayto Park except with way more rollercoasters and far less crowds. They had a Santas Grotto thing as well which was really well done. Its about 15 mins from Southampton City Centre.

Aer Lingus flies (don’t forget to offset!) to Southampton in the mornings and evenings every day. We flew out Thursday evening, arsed about the City on Friday taking in the Xmas markets and doing the standard kids stuff around the City. Spent all of Saturday in the Park and flew home Sunday morning. Aside from London, you’ve as much in Southampton as any other UK city - along with a few massive cruise shops in the Docks which you don’t often get to see.

Probably the easiest weekend we’ve ever put down with them as there’s very little waiting around and the crowds aren’t massive like in London. The city is so small that everything is within walking distance as well. Coinciding the trip with a game in St Marys would be the only thing I’d do differently.
