Yes. Make sure they’ve a clean license

My friend says it does and wants to out me down, how does this affect me?

Unless you crash their car it doesn’t AFAIK.

It does if its a related party anyway. Not sure how it would work for a randomer

And the person being added would need a clean record too

It does if they own a car and have their own policy for some weird reason that was explained to me before but I can’t remember.

Sure as a married couple you lads should get a good reduction at this stage.

Best thing you can do is check with your own insurance company and take it from there.

I renewed my insurance last Oct but a week later the car’s engine went so rang up Chill and told them I needed to cancel the policy. They said there was a cancellation fee but I could suspend the policy until I got a replacement (I assumed to avoid paying a cancellation fee). Got the replacement car there and a new disk was sent out but only up until September. I’ve been charged a full years insurance for 6 months cover. They’re trying to say tough sh!t.

You pay in full upfront?

Monthly direct debits but these are going to the finance company who paid the Insurance company upfront.

Tell them you want to lodge an official complaint. Then if they don’t resolve it escalate it to the regulator. Generally they want to avoid this but they are within their rights in this id imagine. You’ll have to go with the “it wasn’t explained to me” line. Ask them to pull all calls from the time etc. Lodge a gdpr request. Make a general nuisance of yourself. It’ll be a hard slog I’d imagine. Have you been paying the monthly direct debits?

Yeah I’ve been paying Dr Debits from Oct to date on the presumption that I was prepaying for my next policy. All to avoid a cancellation fee, pricks then charged me a second admin fee when i went to un-suspend this policy.

Try to get them to pull the initial phone call.

  1. If they pull it and it’s not explained properly there’s your defence.
  2. They say they can’t pull it for whatever reason. You can make whatever case you want without fear of contradiction.
  3. They pull it, and they have explained it, your fucked.

Don’t say a word either way until they’ve pulled the call. Because if they can contradict you your bollixed.

Will it matter that my language was a tad coarse during both phone calls?

It probably won’t help. Your entitled to cancel within 14 days, but you would have to pay a cancellation fee. It all depends on how well everything was explained to you. Hopefully it wasn’t explained very well at all.

My language was coarse because they duped me in to believing I was prepaying for my next policy.

Are “independent” insurance brokers adviseable? Between mortgage, car, house etc I’d say ther could be savings to be had especially on the mortgage one.

Classic example here of what happens when you send a boy out to do a mans job.

Oh coarse this time? Ah that’s grand. You were well entitled to be pissed off this time around.

I would say if you are happy to pay the few quid it’s worth giving an insurance broker the shot at beating the best price you’ve been quoted. Inputting all your info into the various sites is an absolute pain in the hoop and might be worth the few bob to people.
I wouldn’t use one as it’s only laziness really. They can have access to insurance companies that you can’t get a quote from so maybe they can beat the price. As I said it costs nothing to ask, but in my experience they rarely beat a price you’ve found yourself by doing the leg work. They are good for older people maybe who aren’t that tech savy, or someone who is a difficult case.

Definitely switch your mortgage, it’s the biggest saving anyone can make at the moment.
I’d be extremely wary of mortgage brokers, they can be incentivised to switch your mortgage to a particular bank over another one as they are paying higher comm’s than another bank. Some banks won’t pay them any commission at all so might not even be in their reckoning. There are good ones out there I’m sure.
There is very little case to be made for using a mortgage broker in my opinion because there are very few mortgage providers so it would only take you ten minutes to check who’s offering the best rates and not be in fear of getting pushed down the wrong road for the sake of who pays the best commission.
Some people recommend them on the basis that they can help you put your mortgage application forward “in the best light”. That may well be the case but so will the lad in the bank who’s working on targets to get x amount of mortgages over the line each month. There might have been a case for them in the recession when it was hard to get a mortgage. Generally the lad in the bank will give you the same advice for free. Save x a month, don’t use gambling sites etc.
Other people will say they help you with the paperwork, but really all it does is add a middle man into an already ridiculously drawn out process. The lad in the bank will help with the paperwork too sure. There are enough useless bastards involved in the process, between the bank, the real estate agent and the solicitor without paying to add another one into the mix,

This is a website run by the consumer protection authority comparing mortgage rates. They’ve no skin in the game and it’s a fairly useful tool. One of my first actions upon seizing power in a bloody coup will be to setup the same comparison tool for all insurance companies, which they will be legally obliged to partake in.
