I think in all fairness you are familiar with the privileges from being a white male from a wealthy, developed nation.

It’s perfectly reasonable for everyone to hire “the best person for the job” for every individual role. And yet without “artificial” constructs to increase employment opportunities to those who don’t have the same background, the under privileged will remain under represented in employment.

I’d like to think most people aspire to a society which promotes opportunities and capabilities for all - and doesn’t just measure GDP increases as a benchmark for progress.

Hence policies such as paternity leave which are designed to spread the cost of parenting more evenly between the genders and therefore improving the prospects for women in the labour force.

What are your actual solutions to this then?

Anything that skews away from Equality of Opportunity to Equality of Outcome in arenas heavily linked to capitalist pursuits are unrealistic. You can’t ignore the best person for the job and hire based on arbitrary factors, that creates its own problems.

The Rooney Rule is a good example of increasing opportunities for minorities. But it’s creative solution in a very specific industry which has its own hiring processes.

If any hiring professional could get more CVs of minorities into the mix they’d be happy to see it. But in my line of work e.g. I haven’t seen a female CV for the last 2 jobs we posted. Does that make our hiring sexist? No, obviously not. The jobs were listed publicly and anyone realistically qualified for the role could apply. You can’t control who applies for your job. You can go to great lengths to promote the diverse nature of your company but it’s an open market on applications.

What do you think about taking the current make up of the board or group into account when considering what the profile of the best person for the job might be?

The best person for the job is the best person for the job.

yes, so a more diverse company is better than a non diverse company

Im not so sure. My bin collectors are all white men and they do a brilliant job.

Spoken like a true bin dipper

Give me a practical example of that.

That company needs to be reported. Obviously some discriminatory hiring practices going on there

A practical example of a more effective decision because of diversity in the decision making group? That’s a bit of a nonsense question isn’t it, am I supposed to really a whole scenario from memory. Maybe you disagree with the research as I’ve relayed it, I came across in a presentation from Accenture (I think it was them anyway), it was pretty categorical anyway.

I never said I disagreed I asked for more info and you faffed it. :man_shrugging:

You can discuss the premise one way or another. What I’m conveying was presented as the result of a lot of research, I can’t really be expected to detail practical examples which comprises the research, I think it’s a bit silly to ask that, especially when any example I come up with would be anecdotal at best.

You must believe what I say because I said it.

I welcome the rainbow coloured cupcakes. I for one am a very big fan of all cakes no matter the colour, orientation or gender.

Some great points made here.
