Anderson and Broad are hardly going to chip in with what’s really needed to change the landscape for England, a few hundred extra runs.

It hasn’t attracted too much comment but Australia were on 195/5 in their first innings and fortunate enough to be even have that much on the board. Warner on his way to 94 survived a no ball wicket on 17, a dropped catch on 40, any number of ropey play and misses and there was a botched run out as well. Stuff like that is all obviously the by product of an average team but Wood, Robinson and to a lesser extent Woakes bowled well enough and created the opportunities to have bowled Australia out for 250.

It was an under fire Travis Head who many in Australia didn’t want in the team coming in at Number 6 that posted the quick fire match winning innings of 152.

England badly need an Ollie Pope or Jos Buttler to do something like that in the middle order. All they ever seem to do though is play a few nice shots and get out in the 20’s or 30’s.

the BT commentators mentioned it 5 or 6 times last night

1986 the last England win at the Gabba. Beefy hit a century and John Emburey spun us to victory.

That was at the old Gabba. Great character to the old Gabba with the dog track as well. That modern day concrete bowl with the wonky looking seat colours is an abomination.

Broad and Anderson will start in Adelaide ahead of Leach and Wood, I’d imagine. Wood was excellent in Brisbane but with his injury record, they’ll be managing his workload and can’t see him playing back to back tests.

As regards the batting line up, god knows what they’ll do. Maybe just select them all en masse again. Any changes is really just a case of shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic.

Any thoughts on team selection, cricket enthusiasts?

Pressure building from the very first ball and Broad finally picks up the wicket of Harris after 7.3 overs. Great catch from Buttler behind the stumps.

Australia 45/1 at lunch.

Very tight disciplined bowling from England just going for 1.8 across the 25 overs. Not too many chances after the initial overs. It’s a very flat wicket already.

Poor glove work from Buttler to drop Labuschagne on 21. Not the easiest of catches but he should still have got it. The one he took to dismiss Harris was far more difficult.
