those clubs done well in europe during the second phase of the euopean cups where provincial teams could do well(villa, forest , malmo, monchengladbach, bruge)
those days are long gone
btw-was Ki the centre half for Swansea? you would want to be scoring a lot more than 3 if he was centre half

Crucial win for the Toffees V Sunderland at Goodison Park today. The performance was pretty flat overall, but the result was all important given that Everton had got into the habit of leaving points behind them in games they’ve dominated.
Sunderland took the lead, somewhat against the run of play, just before half time through Adam Johnson. They were looking quite comfortable up 'till the 77th minute, when Fellaini lashed a shot, through the legs of John O Shea, and it nestled in the bottom corner beyond the reach of Mignolet. Two minutes later, Fellainis cool flick again found its way between the legs of John O Shea, into the path of Jelavic, who bravely slotted past the advancing Mignolet.
Despite his contribution, Fellaini actually gave one of his quietest performances of the season, he had been well marshalled up front by Cuellar and O Shea, and the goals only came after he had been reverted to a midfield role, following the substitution of Phil Neville. Kevin Mirallas started the game superbly, giving the Sunderland defence a torrid time of it, until he left the field midway through the first half with a hamstring injury. Seamus Coleman had a solid game at right back, but was rarely tested by James Mc Clean, who had a quiet game.
Everton stay 4th, ahead of West Brom on goal difference, and 2 points behind Manchester City in 3rd place.
A very important 3 points jimmy, good to see them win even if they weren’t playing brilliantly.its normally the other way around.mirallas was a huge loss again when he went off.the lad is quality.hopfully he won’t be out long.
Ya, he’s been improving with every game and looks like he’s going to be a massive addition to the team. Like the Liverpool game, we really missed him after he went off today.
As you said, it’s good to see them winning when playing within themselves, a real sign of a good team. Our title challenge would be given a serious boost if Villa can hold out here for a point against United, and if there’s draw between Spurs and City tomorrow. I think it would be asking too much of Liverpool to take a point off our other title rivals, Chelsea.
True I guess jimmy.adding to the squad in jan is very important.squad is a little thin.neville has to be dropped.everton started to play proper stuff after he went off.
Mirallas, felli and jags have been savage all season.pinnear and jelavic have shown patches of there quality and are starting to come into it well now.
Baines has been solid,Coleman is settling in to rb really well as well as getting forward his defending has improved really well bar one mistake v Fulham.
I prefer distan to johnny at cb but then again who was evertons player of the season last year.
Barkley is flying it at Wednesday,I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back on the bench come jan.
Good times for the blue side of Liverpool at the mo.
I don’t think Neville will be getting his game once Gibson returns, but Gibson is injury prone, and struggles to regain fitness after injury, so defensive midfield is definitely an area that needs strengthening. A deal for the Belgian, Ofoe, fell through on the last day of the transfer market, but their is talk of Everton going back in for him in January.
I agree regarding Distin, he’s left footed, so is more suited to playing the left sided centre back position than Heitenga, and Jagielka always seems more comfortable alongside him. I think Moyes needs to stick with Coleman at right back now. His performances have been very good, despite the odd mistake such as the one at Fulham last week. There are more positives than negatives to his game and the mistakes will eventually disappear with more experience / game-time.
Jelavic is probably suffering a bit from his exertions in the Euros. He’s very much a confidence player and if he regains his sharpness and form he will be slotting regularly again. Barkley doing quite well at Wednesday, and would give us more attacking options if Moyes decided to recall him in January, he could be the final piece in the jigsaw in the push for the title.
You won’t find many Evertonians disagreeing with you there KIB. He has been a terrific servant to the club, but there is no doubt that he is no longer worthy of a place in the starting eleven, and I think he’s humble enough to admit that himself. It was no coincidence that Everton got themselves back in the game after he was replaced today. I expect he will still have a major part to play at the club in a coaching role after he retires, and will be strong contender to succeed David Moyes as manager.
always find it funny when Irish EPL fans who dont go to games have an opinion thats so far off what the match going locals think-Faldo is the prime example of this
its nearly as bad as when Irish EPL fans say things just to be on the same page as the match going locals - jimmy is them prime example of thi
