The Official TFK NCT Thread

I’m on site.
There is one lift working. I’m in the lane with the working lift so should get the full test done. Seems like pot luck. Others being sent away without the lift test being completed.

Meant to update the forum as I was in there yesterday morning. Situation exactly as you report. I’ve completely mugged myself off as I went in to do the test early because I have a busy month ahead, and now have to go back in again within the next 28 days anyway because my test is incomplete. FFS sake.

As an aside, have the testers always roared the outcomes the tests to the owners at the end? Maybe it was just where I was sitting, but the whole waiting room seemed to be making sharp intakes of breath, etc, at the various diagnoses being revealed to other motorists. I’d say Stephen didn’t even know there was such a thing as winter tyres until yer man told him he had wan winter tyre and wan summer tyre on the back and he’d have to fail him for it.

Some great reading material

I love a bit of narrow gauge

It’s fascinating to watch.

Were you one of the lucky ones in the end, TS?

Yip, full test completed and passed.

I was sitting nearest the hatch and its fascinating to listen to the conversations. One tester came back in and for some reason called the car model , a BMW x3, instead of the owner name. A suitably uppity middle aged lady went forward to counter,
“She passed fine”
"Well I didnt expect there to be anything wrong "
“You’ll have to come back for the lift test”
“Back here? Well that will depend on variables like work”

She left the counter.

You jammy man on getting the underbody done.

Yer man took me through my results (passed everything) and then flipped over to an extra page stapled to the back explaining the whole lift testing suspension quandary. There’s a line in there he singled out to read aloud to me: “We ask that you refrain from making any further retest bookings until NCTS confirm you should do so - We will contact customers regarding the completion of their test” and guided his pen underneath the text as well, just in case I was a slow reader, or from Clare.

I nodded to him that I understood, and then he added happily as I was turning to leave that I “should probably ring them in the next few weeks to get it sorted.”

At that moment in time I would have loved to have been one of these people that gets satisfaction from loudly berating some poor, lowly, ineffectual instrument of a bloated, irritating institution, but I am not one of those people, so I meekly nodded again, went “Grand job thanks” and left.

Do patrons have to pay twice if they’ve to come back for the uncompleted test?

No additional fee if you have passed everything else.

For one reason or another I’ve an old car coming up to a year over due an NCT. If it were to go over the year what would happen?

Over is over, don’t think the penalty is any more severe

Sorry, I didn’t make myself clear.

Say if you get it done six months late, they still back date it to the due date, and it’s due again in six months.
So if it goes over a year and they back date it to the due date, it’s then due again the minute you drive out of the NCT centre.

You have me there
Does it only last a year for older cars?

Yea.

I’m interested to hear the result in this one, I just assumed the NCT Start Date would be from the Cert Date if it wasn’t done before the Due Date?

Your NCT expires end Feb. You get it done in May. The new cert is from whatever date in February it was due until 12 months from original due date in the case of cars 10 years old.

In the case of under 10 years the cert is for 2 years.

So if your NCT expires in Feb 219 (in Michael Noonan parlance) and you get it done in May 220, is your NCT valid for a year from Feb 219 or Feb 220?

Feb 20 I had an oul Bora for years and it’s expiry date was September one particular year say Sept 212 it was due I didn’t bother getting it done drove around for a year without an NCT got it done in late September 213 and was valid until late Sept 214.
