The Pretend Fitness Thread

Had started January quite well with a good mix of running, gyming and even ball-wallin, but the bidness trip this week has made clane shit of the routine. Need to get back into it from tomorrow morning.

Tis hard work, mixing bidness and fidness.

Started off 2020 with great gusto with ambitions to lose a stone and get back running sub 20 mins for 5km but have had a slight setback this week with a mild hamstring twinge.

Any advice here appreciated. Should I stop running for a while or just do slow jogs.

@anon61878697 should I avoid doing my lunges or what?

Thumb is already up me hole, etc…

That’s a serious goal

How mild was the twinge would be the question, if you can jog slowly without it causing you pain I’d keep going, I read something recently on that very point which went against the traditional prescription of rest

I happened to be passing through UL this morning and did a leisurely sub 23 minute parkrun with close to 10 miles already in my legs, nice to e able to converse with the crowd around you,

I crashed my bike and smashed my shoulder and elbow last weekend. No breaks fortunately but taking it easy this week.

stop running in ground shoes

Hammy is rest kid for a bit kid… Avoid stretching the hammy but do the other muscles like glutes, hip fkexors etc, do a little foam rolling in the same areas and take some ibrufeon to bring down any inflammation… I’d say light jog in a few days, if no reaction pick it up a little bit the bext one and so on.

That’s serious running. Anything at or under a 22:30 would be a very good day for me, I’ve yet to go sub 22. Would you solely do 5-10Ks, longer distances, interval running, etc?

I’ve been running since I gave up hurling about 6-7 years ago. Joined a local club which makes you get out. How often do you run. If there’s a club anywhere near you I’d give it a go. You’d be amazed what you’d do in a group.
I’ve run all sorts of distances. I’m a bit of a slogger so run better times for longer distances.

It probably only works out as once a week on average. All 5Ks, I’ve done a handful of 10Ks but I tend to do my running midweek and 5K is the perfect length to clear the mind during the working day. The group running point is very true, did the relay marathon at the GLR earlier this year and had to to constantly try and pace myself rather than just overtaking everything in sight. I was utterly banjaxed when it got to the handover and had to lie on the grass by the flagpoles in UL for five minutes to recover.

Would you be able to run a single kilometre in under 4 minutes and maintain good running form? You should be well able to go sub 22 if you can, 5k is a tough distance, go out as hard as you can and try to hang on when the lungs are bursting
I’ve gone under 20 a couple of times but to me it feels like my limit, when I look at the 17 minute fellas it doesn’t look like they’re going much faster, pity I didn’t try running in my 30s.

Milford 10k on Sunday, hope to go under 43 but I’m not in my best shape at the moment

Went for 5k on the trail this morning, 23:30
Very happy with that, was comfortable enough for most of it bar the last half a km.

Have Done nothing but a weekly kick about since the little one was born… Did a 2k run a couple of weeks back and it burned…hadnt jogged in over a year. Gym is gone altogether since my nearest one closed with the fire in Douglas .

I’m fucked.

There isn’t a decent trail that I know of in the vicinity of Limerick city, I’ve run in Curraghchase (just confusing), Cratloe and Keeper, I’m as happy on the roads,
Did some of the Kerry way last year, that’s superb, a few nice mountains to run down around Killarney also
