The Rugby Thread (Part 2)

Once again, you have six Leinster fee paying schooled players in your squad.

In addition to the fee paying schools in Munster. And the world class overseas players. And your club players.

You were making this a moan about Leinster when you are one of the biggest beneficiaries to the pathways?

Yes like I want everyone to have a fair crack of the whip.

Not just the players attending fee paying schools.

Probably not but someone of his quality you’d always take him if you could

Not the case though. Frawley, Osborne and Furlong from Saturday hardly needed that.

Leinster do an excellent job of mining the club system, far better than the other provinces in fact despite the fact that players are more likely to end up at a rugby school.

Leinster are extremely well run no doubts about that.

Doesn’t change the fact they are seriously advantaged by the investment in private schools.

Munster are extremely advantaged by the investment of Leinster private schools.

Maybe in your own head.

In fairness to the deranged Munster fans, Munster had agreed to sign Stephen Moore for six months a few years ago - exact same situation - and it was blocked because another province already had a foreign hooker.

In fairness they don’t really get the top top talent. Joey Carbery and Andrew Conway probably the highest calibre players that they’ve been handed. Tadhg Beirne ended up there in a very roundabout manner.

Sure Leinster have had plenty of long term first team players from Munster over the years. Ross, cronin, reddan. Why are you making such a big deal of Munster having signed a few Leinster players that were surplus to requirements when Leinster are so much stronger currently?

Six of your first team squad from that system.

The other provinces have taken players from all levels from Leinster- from schoolboys to Lions.

It’s not Leinster’s fault that when Ulster got a stadium paid for them and outside investment that they made a pigs ear of their management structure and developed a toxic culture.

It’s also not Leinster’s fault that when Munster had a boom period that Munster went off and built a white elephant, getting everyone else to pay for it.

When Leinster got outside investment, the first thing they did was develop world class training facilities.

Not in the last 10 years. Those are players of the 2000s vintage when Munster were certainly pulling their weight on player production.

Munster chose vanity projects like Thomond instead of investing in their Academy.

They’ve had a lot of heartbreak in Europe in recent seasons and have just said ‘fuck it’

Between Snyman, Jordie, the big Aussie prop plus all the Irish internationals - if one of the tens steps up - I think you’d possibly be looking at the strongest club team there has ever been.

You’re completely missing the point.

The private schooled kids in Leinster have all the advantages.

If you evened things up they wouldn’t be filling all the others squads.

Not true.

Munster have been sniffing around Leinster schoolboys for 20 years. They offered Fitzgerald a full contract, which is why Leinster had to move him up from an Academy one out of school.

Could you imagine if Leinster did the same with the most high profile Munster underage player of a generation?!

And that was when Munster clearly had the whip hand over Leinster in 2006!

Heck Munster did the same in 2009 with Conway out of school, trying to use his uncle to get him down south.

Munster have been taking in young Leinster players over the last 10 years as well. Munster could well have Dan Sheehan if they hadn’t went off and taken Eoghan Clarke the year before.

There’s nothing to say Munster won’t hit it next time out. This happens all the time- the Melbourne Storm famously farmed Brisbane for the best rugby league talent while the Broncos were the hometown team.

Why is the last ten years relevant? When Munster were stronger Leinster were happy to have plenty of Munster players there become long term first team players. Why are you making such a big deal about it when the shoe is on the other foot?

You’re in complete La La land here.

Leinster are picking from incredibly well funded schools system.

Nobody else can compete with that.

Not in Ireland or around the world.

So make Irish rugby worse then?

If Munster were exploiting their club system, we could be getting more players of the calibre of Frawley, Furlong and the Osbornes.

No give more kids a fair chance and make ireland better.

2024/25 Leinster would probably win a 6 Nations. They’d 100% beat Wales, Scotland, Italy and a rest of Ireland XV.
