We are in till the very end of June but we take a couple of days in June and a couple of days in May which are very welcome as they break it up a bit. I think we have a half-day to finish on a Monday next June 30th, I think I might bring in a few cigars that day as I’ll be the only one there

I dont believe that for a minute

The mobile phone problem with kids is far from an easy fix

Brilliant. Put em in a box till they go home. Kids will actually talk to each other. Theyll enjoy it more

Sounds like an absolutely brilliant idea. Easy enough to enforce too if it’s a clear ban across all schools. Hand them in in the morning get them back at home time. Should be banned in general for u16s in reality. Well look back on these years in horror id say. Ten year olds with the whole internet in their pocket ffs.

Exactly lad,no harm at all to have a few hours of phone free time.

I imagine that there will be a lot of very cheap phones handed up when caught in class with the good ones kept elsewhere. Anyway all it takes is one teacher not enforcing it and the system breaks down.

You’re looking for problems mate. Some schools do it already. Go to your tutor/base room at start of day, hand in phone. Phone gets given back at lunchtime or the end of the day. You’ll have some arsehole parents writing in saying they demand that their kid is contactable. Tell them they can ring the school if its important. Sure 90 of the people theyll be texting/sharing shit with will be in the same boat.

Is it true they’ve already done a @farmerinthecity-esque climb down on the mobile phone thing less than 24 hours after announcing it?

It was being discussed after 6 on drivetime,
They’ve hardly rowed back since then.

The fucking unions will piss and moan about it I suppose

The broader govt aren’t supportive of it apparently. Not sure what that means. Norma is also planning to write to the schools about it in the next few weeks. Surely she could have written to them over the summer rather than when everyone is back in school. A new policy like this would be easier to implement from the start of the year rather than during the school year I’d have thought

Might take a year to phase it in but no harm. Give people plenty of notice and allow space for it to be stress tested for issues.

Works fine in other countries - including every school I’ve worked in in Singapore - so god only knows why you think otherwise. Are Irish kids unique or something?

The young lady has started secondary. They are only allowed pick two sports apparently. Two of the options are horse riding and sailing. You need to have your own horse/boat though…
