Gentlemens semi finals day is here, the dross has been eliminated and we are down to the last 4. Wildcard french/brit rich boy Fery vs the french open champion number 2 seed Zverev. I think Ferys incredible run is coming to an end today. Zverev is in flying form and confidence is high after winning his first slam and just don’t see Fery being able to trouble him. Zverev to win in 3.
The other semi has the super Italian Sinner against the GOAT Djokovic. This is an interesting one, on one hand we have Djokovic coming in of a long 5 set marathon in the previous round so how he has recovered from this. On the other hand we have Sinner who suffers in the heat as we saw in the french open. Can see Sinner winning this in 4, just think he has too much for Djokovic.
I’m not sure. Unlike some contemporaries of his (CC Ronaldo), he’s far from disgracing himself over the period of Alcaraz-Sinner dominance.
He’s in a bit of a catch 22 situation and I think he will stick at it for another year or more in the hope that he will catch a Slam with Alcaraz and Sinner out/underperforming.
He’s miles off the level of Alcaraz and Sinner now. He did capitalise on Sinner’s health travails in Melbourne in January to spring a surprise in the semi final only to be soundly beaten by Alcaraz in the final.
Too late for that now. To win a slam he would have to hope that Alcaraz, Sinner and now Zverev are all knocked out. His best chance would have been the french open last month but i think Zverev would have beaten him.
Interesting final now between Sinner and a super confident Zverev. It will be tight with both of them serving well. Hard to call but i think Sinner will shade it.
There were any number of players that would have beaten Djokovic in Paris last month. A large part of winning Grand Slams is energy conservation, short snappy straight set wins in early rounds or at a push 4 short sets. Djokovic last few years getting bogged down in long 5 set matches early in the tournament which takes a toll down the road. Whatever outside chance he had today against Sinner was reduced to zero after 5 hours 15 minutes on court against Auger-Aliassime in the previous round. That’s all just the ageing process. Same thing happened to Federer and Nadal in their last few years.
Sinner has won his last last 9 matches against Zverev, the most recent 6 of those in straight sets. Let’s see if finally becoming a Grand Slam winner at Roland Garros does anything for the inferiority complex that Zverev has when he comes up against Sinner.
I disagree. The majority of those attendees I’m looking at there all week wouldn’t care if @Fagan_ODowd was playing me.
They’re there because it’s Wimbledon with the accompanying trappings - celebrity spotting opportunities, Wexford strawberries and a few canapés among other attractions. It’s on the ‘Must Do’ list.
The days of going to Wimbledon to see Vinnie Jones grab Gazza’s nuts are gone.
