LIMERICK MAN Conor Niland is through the last round of qualifiers for Wimbeldon.
Where in Limerick was he born?
He was born in Birmingham, England but was raised in Limerick where he honed his superb tennis ability.
Don’t go getting all KIB Mong on us.
Have to say there are some cracking birds in Women’s tennis. On down beat note I see the Williams sisters are back.
Ya ha ha. A tenis player honing their ability in England? That doesn’t add up bro.
I think Runt is in agreement with this, pointing out that he honed his skills on the mean streets of Limerick, playing street tennis with fence posts.
I’m in agreement with nothing.
Any of the tennis fans on here suspect Nadal could be using Performance Enhancing Drugs/Blood Doping. He was rumoured to be named in Operation Puerto and after reading interview with him in Sunday Times couple of weeks back I’d have even more suspicious. Appeared to go out of his way to criticise Agassi for his comments couple of years back regarding crystal meth saying how there was no drugs problem in tennis.
It wouldn’t surprise me entirely. There is a suspicious shortage of people being caught on drugs in tennis, and there is certainly a benefit in terms of both strength and endurance that could be obtained. Nadal is a bit of a physical freak, though he has been since the age of 18 so either it’s natural or he’s been on something for a long time. The only high profile drugs ban I can remember in the last few years was Gasquet being caught for taking coke. There was something involving Rusedski and a few other players around five years ago that I can’t remember the exact details of, but they all got them overturned if memory serves me right anyway.
Yeah tennis seems to have a particularly poor attitude to doping. Just googled it and Rusedski tested positive for nandrolone. Thing is I can sort of understand willingness to cover it up. Needs a few good journalists to investigate it imo.
Yeah, there was a few of them. I think they said it was caused by something that was provided to them by the ATP so it was overturned on that basis.
I’m not a Nadal fan at all but I think that is wild speculation. The lad is a monster, naturally I would have said, but he’s actually gotten smaller in the past couple of years because of the pressure he put on his knees.
Don’t think you’d be wearing sleeveless tops to show off your muscles if you were taking drugs (although he doesn’t any more).
And he’s also winning slam after slam so his profile is so big that he would surely be caught.
Don’t try tar tennis with cycling’s brush, Larry.
He was supposedly named in files related to Opeation Puerto was he not. The UCI (who have hardly a good reputation when it comes to doping) banned riders who were found on such files and careers ended (rightly so). Cycling has far more tests than tennis and still guys like Ullrich and Armstrong got away with it for years so using tests as evidence really isn’t good enough. Same with athletics too with Marion Jones etc. I was really struck by Nadals comments on drugs actually and would have big doubts particularly after alleged links to OP.
If sports like tennis really wanted to tackle doping in the sport I’d be fairly sure they’d uncover a lot. From my observations though the will isn’t there. Positive tests scare sponsors is the truth of it.
The Operation Puerto link was just rumour and innuendo I think. Barca and Real were also implicated. But there’s no evidence really.
Did Puerta and Canas get done for doping at some stage? I might have just made that up. I’m sure there are drugs in tennis but it’s not as advantageous obviously as it would be in swimming, athletics or cycling as technical ability takes precedence over strength and endurance.
He was wearing them because he’s a bender.
There were tennis players involved in Operacion Puerto but as far as I recall their names were blocked from release by a judge.
Wiki says
On 5 July 2006, Fuentes was indignant that only cyclists had been named and said he also worked with tennis and football players
Hadn’t realised that Sorensen retired. Best of luck to Conor Niland today.
Anyone know what time he’s on at? I checked the Wimbeldon site but couldn’t find any schedule.
That 21 year old Russian who was prepping in Glasnevin is a mighty bit of stuff. I’d say she’d make smithereens out of you.
Agree with your general point although stamina as well as skill plays a huge part of high level tennis and it’s not hard to imagine PHDs being in the game although I’d be more inclined to look in the direction of the rapidly improving player than the likes of Nadal whose always been consistently brilliant. Chicago Bulls Point Guard Rerrik Rose let it slip earlier in the year that he thinks drugs are a serious issue in NBA but retracted his comments very quickly claiming he didn’t understand the question. I think it may well be good investiagative journalism that does uncover the truth to these stories as clearly with so much grade involved it’s not exactly in the governing bodies best interests to declare that doping happens to be prominent in their respective sports.
Grade, that’s a good Galway word. Fiend. Tome. Beor.
Bottle of B down the Sparch like.
Where are you from Laz? I’m told Knocknacarra is more like Westside these days, that some refer to it as K-Side.
That’s a shame.
