The Trial of Officer Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd

63.5kg?

Is he a midget?

A lightweight.

Elvis has had bigger shits than him.

Genuinely it will be hard on the basis of this to convict of murder Iā€™d imagine. Manslaughter I reckon with a high sentence.

The bar isnā€™t that high for third degree or even second degree murder. For second degree they have to prove that Chauvinā€™s actions were criminal (an intentional assault) and directly led to Floydā€™s death, third degree that his actions were extremely dangerous and led to death. It will mainly come down to whether the defense can create enough doubt on the cause of death.

The testimony of white officers will condemn him. Definite excessive force to the point of cruelty, what charge does that fit with?

Heā€™s clearly a thug. But is there any indication that racial bias played a part?

Third degree murder.

Ah right. I presumed (obviously wrongly) that first degree was pre meditated, second was murder but not premeditated, third was manslaughter for people the judge or prosecution donā€™t like , or murder 1/2 for people they do.
My error.
Murder 2 or more likely 3 Iā€™d say.

Is race a real issue in the court case?

My feeling is that it was partly motivated by race but that canā€™t be proven, the question is how far did he step over the line of what couldā€™ve justified use of force, thereā€™ll be no winners anyway, thatā€™s for sure

Thatā€™s kinda what happened tho.

6 years, accidental manslaughterā€¦ As Iā€™ve said from the off, the deceased was drugged out if his mind and a danger to everyone.

Minneapolis and half the country will burn again if itā€™s a manslaughter conviction. A lot of pressure on the jury, arguably to the point where they may not themselves be safe if they reach the ā€œwrongā€ verdict.

There wonā€™t be a flat-screen TV safe in Target if he is acquitted.

It is in the context of bias of jurors. Thatā€™s why the testimony of white officers is huge.

Why do you think it was partly motivated by race?

Apparently the two had history, though Iā€™m open to correction on that.

It will be hard to find a concrete evidence on race but he should definitely be convicted in some manner relating to George Floydā€™s death.

Are the other officers on trial/been charged too?

I think they both worked as bouncers in the same nightclub

No reason in particular, these things often do, black people are treated differently by cops much of the time (Iā€™m trying to be careful here :grinning:) statistics seem to bear that out

A 10 stone bouncer?

Black people saw what happened George Floyd and were reminded of times they or those close to them were profiled and mistreated, and were rightly angry even if what happened Floyd might not have been motivated by his race.

Then a bunch of whites, instead of shutting up and listening to them, decided they wanted to be front and centre telling others how better they were compared to them and the world how righteous they are on all matters.

So heres the controversial statement, blacks are over policed, but black men between the ages of 15 and 65, 5% of the US population, commit 50+% of murders for example. Thereā€™s loads of inbuilt reasons for this, poverty, distrust of police due to prior racism therefore lack of protection from them, lack of health and social services due to racist policies for decades. But police officers respond to emergency calls, they canā€™t sit around theorising how society has failed people. So is it understandable that thereā€™s some bias? Or when a call comes in that a black guy with a gun robbed a store should they go around searching for a mexican granny? That doesnā€™t excuse mistreatment of course.
