I know there have been a few in Limerick and generally it’s ran as “support a great charity and your local GAA club”. They don’t reveal what the split is but you get the idea that it’s for both.

This is how it was advertised. Race proceeds go to Charity X and Club Y. Now it’s factually correct but to most observers it’s a 50/50 split. I’ve no problem with the club using it to raise funds for themselves but if you throw a charity in and make a song and dance about it to get goodwill and more entries then it should be well above a single figure percent that they get

100%, naturally people are gonna be more generous if a proper charity is supposedly benefitting, that’s fairly shitty if it is as described

To me, it is more palatable than the situation you see a lot of where people do skydives or climb mountains in exotic locations and while some money may end up with the charity, it is, first and foremost paying for what is a holiday or experience for the person involved.

Does that still go on? It was a real Celtic Tiger thing. Like Niall Mellon and Sean Dunne throwing up a few shacks in the townships in South Africa and patting themselves on the back but I haven’t come across it in years.

Yeah, very definitely a thing.

Skydives is probably the big one among younger people. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a huge one aswell.

Among people who are slightly older, I’ve seen a few motorbiking across the US.

Again, I don’t know how the money is being spent in each situation, so maybe I’m wronging some people. But I think that you should be up front about it.
