Tipperary GAA 2018

Tipps biggest mistake. Padraic Maher centre back.

Let him out on the wing where he has cleared more ball than any defender in Ireland over the last 7/8 years.

I actually think Tipp are gradually getting the lineup right as the year goes on (Maher & Barret midfield is as good a pairing as Tipp have) but that full-back line could be absolutely cleaned alright. Flynn seems to have gone off the radar completely after the Limerick game, was he injured? Presume Barry has been put out to pasture.

Well that was sore.

My tuppence worth,

  1. Hogan - couldn’t fault him today, puck outs are huge. Jersey is his.
  2. O’Brien - plenty of effort, honest but limited. Big ask find your feet at his age
  3. Kennedy - 100% is this guy, but a full back he is not. Management did wrong by him this year.
  4. Maher - another chap who gives his all but pace is an issue. Age is against him.
  5. O’Dwyer - couldn’t be faulted, hurled himself to a stop. Hopefully he can keep off treatment table going forward.
  6. Paudie - not a centre back, pace ( is he fit? ) and bizarrely his usually excellent fielding all well below par. The rest will do him good.
  7. Brendan M - was Hurling a storm again since put into the half back line, hope injury isn’t serious.
  8. Ronan - started really well again & got good scores. Faded later in second half. Can’t be faulted for woes of team.
  9. Barrett - again had a good 1st half but faded in second half. Poor clearances & passing showed his lack of Hurling recently.
  10. McCormack - losing him was a killer, his work rate is top class.
  11. Bonnar - got a score, tried hard as always but pace is beginning to desert him. Time not in his favor.
  12. McCarthy - took his goal well & works hard. Overall his maiden year has been good.
  13. Seamie - never got a break or pass to open things up for him. Took a wonder score but bar his work rate the score return was disappointing. Right off of a year.
  14. Forde - he just didn’t get it done today. I could forgive the missed free if I felt he was doing the hard running & Tracking.
  15. J McGrath - took some lovely scores and always does his best. Our marquee forward going forward.

Management
Game changers obviously not there or forwards in really top form starting so only so much they could do there.
I can’t be as forgiving though with some of their choices in defense. Day 1, try Flynn and then fuck him off until absolutely needed today. Cahill though was only really replaced by the Red.
Kennedy was a disaster at FB, no other way to describe it. Barry was struggling in the League but was he any worse than Kennedy? I think not.
Use of subs was alarming considering we had 4 games in 4 weeks.
Fresh legs no matter how experienced or not had to be used in a better fashion. Bringing on Bubbles with 2 mins left today?
Church & the lads are all sound honest men & I think the new format and what was required stumped them.

If they do walk I wish them well. 2016 in Croke Park is a day I’ll always treasure.

Hope to Jesus our U20’s go okay this year and that lads put their hands up to make the step up next year.

Well done to the Minors too. great win today after the massive disappointment of last wknds late late defeat.

Would agree with the majority of that. I think Hogan has been excellent but thought he should have kept going long on puckouts towards the end. He was hitting them so far that there was always a decent chance of a break going Tipp’s way. O Brien and Mouse have battled manfully since being put into the backs in fairness to them, nothing handy off them

Often heard lads moaning about Paddy Stapleton years ago. Good corner backs aren’t plentiful.

Its a complete cunt of a position

I think we are in for a return to the bad days of 03-07. Cork and Limerick are far ahead of us.

The excellent minors from 06/07 Paudie, Brendan, Bonnar, Cahill, Noel, Callinan are now over the hill. They owe us nothing. After them only John Mc, Ronan and Dan Mc are coming close to fulfilling their potential. Bubbles and Barrett who should be in their prime and leaders seem intent on pissing their potential away.

After that I don’t think there are too many lads who are up to the level capable of us winning an AI any time soon.

Hogan has a decent puck out but hasn’t pulled off a real save of note in 4 games. I know it’s his 1st season but if Paul Maher could get right he is the long term keeper.

The full back line is a big problem. Barry was a square peg in a round hole. A natural HB but solved the FB problem for us. He had a few dodgy outings but never let us down in Croke park. Personally I’d like them to have tried Heffernan there.

Corner back is a huge problem now. A specialist position. Can’t understand why Barrett wasn’t put there. I like the cut of Flynn. He did well during the league and it’s a pity he was concussed in the Limerick game. After that I don’t think Donagh Maher or O Brien are up to it. Both are game and tough but just seem to be close to getting roasted.

We have a lot of lads in the other lines but after all Ryans tinkering and changing he is no closer to knowing his best team.Barring the FF line there is no line that would put the fear into any team. He had 8 league games and 4 Munster champ games in his 3rd year and still doesn’t know his best team or even close to it. Compare that to how Cody is slowly building a new outfit.

He has consistently picked physical players over skilful stick men. I know there needs to be a balance but not having the likes of Tom Fox and Paul Maher (kilsheelan) on the panel while carrying the likes of Russell and Feehan is mind boggling.

The tactics are archaic and agricultural. The backs just seem to deliver any type of ball in to the forwards who are expected to win it from there. Most of the ball in is 50/50 at best. There have been loads of examples of a back man in space and just launching high balls down on the ff line. Contrast that with the ball played in and movement of Callinan in the 16 final or Barrets pass for Bubbles goal that day. That season was the perfect marriage of Ryans steel and O Sheas style.

Ryan needs to shake up his backroom team if thinks he is the man to stay on. Fanning by all accounts is a good coach but there needs to be someone there with the forwards as well. I don’t know what the game plan was for today but it was clearly obvious an impact was going to be needed off the bench around the 50 min mark in the 2nd half given this was their 4th game on the trot. The substitutions were reactive to injuries rather than proactive in terms of bringing energy to the game. Bubbles coming on in injury time was a case in point. Contrast that with the Clare changes.

However the biggest thing I feel in the backroom is a top class S+C coach. We were lucky in the past 10 years to have excellent lads like Cian O Neill and Kirzenstein. However we now seem to be happy to use the local cheap option. We should be aiming for the best in the country regardless of what county they are from.

If Ryan goes Sheedy is the obvious man to take over. I don’t know if English would fancy it. He was over UCD Fitz for a few years with Johnny Enright. Lots of decent coaches around the county but not managers. Brian Horgan, Michael Bevans, Mernagh, Tommy Dunne, Eddie Enright…

Liam Cahill and Willie Maher would be 2 lads who would have an interest in the job also. I’ve heard mixed stories of Cahill. A marmite character. He has a nice audition for the job with the 21s the main focus now and the spotlight firmly on him. Maher is an outlier in my book.

It’s a poisoned chalice of a job. Tipp fans for the most part aren’t realistic and are as Paidi described the Kerry supporters as like “fucking animals”. The new system however does allow a new team to be blooded quickly in a couple of years if the Tipp fans don’t destroy their development with bickering and rumours.

I’ve stated this before that I feel there is a huge dearth of young talent in the county. No lads U-21 have taken over club games the way that the 06/07 minors did in the past. Lads from recent successful minor teams haven’t stepped up either. We have a terrible record of bringing lads through from minor. Lads have fallen off like Tynan and Nolan. While the lads coming through don’t seem to be at the level required. Other counties seem to be bringing high class young lads through. Wexford, Cork and Limerick are bringing young lads through who are streets ahead of ours. Morris got some game time this year but I’d have reservations about him. Cadell and Jerome Cahill were two lads I had hope for but didn’t make the panel.

Ah I’m just frustrated and ranting and tired. We deserved to go no further. I just hope one of the Munster teams win the AI now.

Looking like July and August for the clubs in Tipperary this year…

He made a great save against either Limerick or Cork and I think he’s been outstanding in every other facet of his game.

Heffernan would be even less suited to full back than Kennedy IMO. Only interested in the ball and less strong over it

Agree with most of the rest of it. Interesting point on the young lads not showing an awful lot in club games, although wouldn’t be as downbeat on Morris, Cadell and Jerome Cahill as they were all minor last year

I’d wonder how a full back line of Barrett - Breen or Ronan Maher - Paul Maher would go?

Will Brian McGrath be much of an option next year or is it too early?

Heffernan can be nice on the ball, in a loose midfielder 20 minute cameo sort of way. Miles from what would be required at FB

How would Ciaran Barrett get on in goal I wonder. Won Fitzgibbons with Mary I and an AI minor with Tipp 2 years ago. I know its not high in our list of problems but Hogan puck outs aside he hasnt pulled off one save of note all year. Seems very upright or rigid and doesnt look like he can get down to stop shots.

I’m not sure about Brian McGrath full stop tbh. Very slow but I suppose it took John a good while to step up too

Hogan let in 5 goals in 4 games. He needs to pull off one at least wonder save at this level. Look at Nashs 2 saves vs Tipp. Look he was steady in his debut season but I don’t know if he is the long term option.

In fairness he made a great save from Hegarty on the Limerick match.

Aren’t you from Clonmel?

5 goals in 4 games isn’t bad. He made a great save against Limerick, and saved at least two certain points over the cross bar. An excellent year in my opinion

Who’s from Clonmel around here?

Nobody that I know of

Fair enough.
