Tipperary GAA 2022

A proper Junior club won the competition. Great result

I’m delighted for Solohead too but if you don’t see a problem with a clubs second team playing a match 3 hours before their First team plays, at a venue 45 minutes away then forget it.

There’s a great vibrancy to Solohead these days - there is always activity in the field any time you’d pass it.

What’s a proper junior club?

That’s the first team.

Bigger clubs with 2nd’s & 3rds winning isn’t the same for me especially when they play stronger lads early doors as the Junior B in the West nearly always starts before Junior A or Intermediate.

There is possibly a case to be made for separate Junior championships for 'proper Junior clubs" and Reserve Championship’s for 2nd/3rd teams like they do in the North.

You know as well as I do that some clubs taking the piss early doors can cost teams qualifying spots by playing higher level players at B especially.

Those teams then tend to weaken as the games go on as the A & Intermediate games roll on.

The fixtures can be terribly unfair for stand alone Junior B clubs in that respect hence the fact I’m delighted for Solohead.

That win this afternoon will be celebrated like a Senior title

Senior/inter clubs are entitled to play their best team for as long as possible. They cant “not play” eligible lads in expectation they “might” play Senior/Inter later in the year. They aren’t taking the piss, just doing what’s right for their club. Otherwise some lads mightnt play anything for the year.

I’m delighted for Solohead but bar an odd trashing early doors most clubs treat the rules well. Even after that hammering if you can’t reach the knockout stages you can’t really have complaints.

Senior teams have to name 18 and other clubs can oppose those 18 afaik. I know if my own club had to name 20 we wouldn’t be near competing. It’s a nice balance.

The 18 named must have played first team hurling the previous year too so its not like any random lads can be picked either.

Drom junior Bs beaten in the mid final by Thurles Sarsfields today cc @treatystones.

There is a back door in the Junior B this year so there is still a chance of a winter trek to Kileedy, where everybody will get fleeced for a replay or two, programmes, lotto tickets and a few pints in Caseys afterwards (or at half time, if you’re so inclined).

Any notables lining out for the B’s?

A couple of Butlers alright; Tommy’s young lads

Seamus? Kevin?

MicheĂĄl and Kevin. A few other lads who were on the seniors a couple of years ago as well.

Micheal Butler, Kevin Butler, Enda Walsh, Martin McGrath, Lupton x2, Michael Costello, Joey Maher and James Ryan would all have played senior in last decade

All bar Maher would have featured in the 2011 County Final win I’d say.

They play Solohead in the Quarters. Redser was togged for Sars.

Upperchurch won the Junior A with James Barry, the Shortts and a few more right good lads playing.

The standard of Junior hurling in Tipp is quite high.

It’s very high, it’s actually impeding a lot of casual players as they know if they are not reasonably fit/dedicated they will get shown up.

Don’t the mid and north have Junior C now to counteract that?

They do to be fair. To be fair to the West their league gives a load of games to lads.

Hard to know if there is any solution.

This can change though. If a Junior A side start poorly or know there’s a stronger group then some lads will effectively only play B with the eyes on the prize so to speak.

Some clubs regarding back from A to B and walking titles is a bit rich though.

Silverware is king I suppose

James Barry would surely have something to offer the church senior side? Cant be more than 33.
