Glasgow’s comeback was reminiscent of Meath’s in the 1991 All-Ireland football final. They just left it too that bit too late. Had there been another two minutes on the clock they might have done it.

Yeah, he was a good one. A bit like a young Boris Johnson. Neither team was very strong mind you, outside their specialist areas such as medicine & maths and wont progress far.

I presume the idea is to give the no hopers a run in the early, summer rounds.

Could you imagine the uproar if Maudlin, Balliol or Trinity Cambridge went out of the competition on July 13th.

It’s August 3rd and four times winners and perennial powerhouse Manchester are OUT, thrashed by a rampant York team.

A very bad omen for the city and its teams ahead of the new Barclays Premier League™ season.

A team captain from Wexford on last nights contest and no comment yet on here???

Goggin was it?

From the New Ross Standard

A New Ross woman will captain the Southampton University team in an episode of the University Challenge (UC) TV show to be aired later this month.

Tricia Goggin, who is the daughter of Peter and Mary Goggin, Millbanks, New Ross, said: ‘It’s really exciting to be involved in a show like this. I have always loved quizzes. I did them at school (Holy Faith). I represented Rosbercon Youth Club (with Denis North as our coach) and also the New Ross PTAA.’

Tricia has been working in Southampton since 2006 and last year started a part-time PhD in Biomedical Engineering.

‘So when I saw the call for UC entrants I thought I should go and have a try at the written test. I got through to the second round, a ‘Mastermind’ style quick fire set of questions and then was really amazed to be picked as the captain! The next step was an interview and test in London. 130 universities entered this stage and 28 were chosen for the TV series.’

Tricia is going to be appearing before Jeremy Paxman on BBC2 on Monday, September 21. ‘It was all filmed at the studios in Manchester and we did lots of practice in the weeks leading up to it. It was a great experience being backstage and seeing how it is all put together. We were all nervous at first but Jeremy and the team were good at putting us at ease. Once the famous music starts and it all gets going you forget about the cameras and enjoy the game.’

The Goggins ran/run (I don’t know if they’re still open) a fine hardware shop.

She was smart enough but a little too light hearted for my tastes. I don’t mind the odd witty comment but I don’t enjoy giggling at incorrect answers. Save that for Only Connect.

UC must be as corrupt as the Fitzgibbon cup with all these mature students appearing in it.

I’m an advocate for an upper age limit on UC. Real life experience is the equivalent of PEDs in this one.

grand rack on her

Mildly disappointed that Bertie Ahern is not representing the London School of Economics in tonight’s edition of the celebrity alumni mini-series.

I nailed a question on last weeks show with the help of the Pogues… Lorelei was the answer.

The contestants missed it.

must have been an unreal feeling

Incredible scenes here as after answering questions across a range of obscure subjects the teams struggle to identify pictures of jack charlton and Tony Adams. There was much delight when they correctly got Matt LeTissier.
