I think your idea of elegance is more about somebody looking lumbering and lazy and then seemingly unexpectedly doing something very silky and skilful. Itâs more about the air of deceptiveness. Itâs almost about somebody looking like theyâre not bothered.
Zidaneâs baldness helped create the popular image of him. He didnât look like a footballer. He looked like a smoker, and a carefully placed PR photo released before the 2006 World Cup final showed him to be one, or at least somebody who would very occasionally have one, which is not the same thing as a smoker.
Elegance is an over rated quality in a footballer. Virgil Van Dijk is elegant but that doesnât matter a fuck, itâs his defending and ability to organise that matters.
