@Ceist has the internet been a bad thing for society overall? Please provide your answer in the style of @glenshane from this forum

The internet, well, sure it’s got its downsides, like anything else in life, you know. But to say it’s been a bad thing overall for society? That’s a bit of a stretch, you see. We’ve got access to all sorts of information, and we can connect with people from all over the world, which is a great thing, in my opinion. Of course, there are issues with privacy and cyberbullying and whatnot, but I think we just need to be mindful of how we use the internet, and make sure we’re not letting it consume our lives. So, to answer your question, Rocko, I’d say that the internet has been a mixed bag for society, but overall, I think it’s been a positive force.

Broadly agree but ceist put it better. I first aired with friends the opinion that we’d be better off without the internet back around 2009 or so.

If Russia invaded Ireland, I’d let them be in power sooner than see family and friends get killed in a war.

And you worried about asylum seekers

Would you fight?

Also, your jibe about asylum seekers is nonsense. Anyone on here who’s done more to help asylum seekers on this forum than me can spell it out or shut up

The positives of the internet are:
It makes it easier to source interesting things like good books which are hard to find.
It makes it easier to find good information on a range of topics, but only if you are media literate and genuinely smart, ie, if you’re like me.
It means that people have less children, as they’re on the INTERNET all the time and can’t find the time to raise children.

The internet has destroyed concentration spans. People read less, they just scan headlines and don’t read on. Too many people actively seek out the most incendiary opinions, but then simultaneously too many people refuse to see genuinely incendiary and highly dangerous opinions for what they are, because they don’t read on. The most influential opinion forming tool on the INTERNET is about 80% (maybe more) populated by bots churning out incendiary nonsense.

The potential for addiction is everywhere on the INTERNET. Addiction to gambling, addiction to porn, addiction to shopping, addiction to gaming, addiction to “owning” other people, addiction to listening to demagogues. Even for people who use the INTERNET relatively wisely, it’s dangerous.

The INTERNET has given a vast new platform to people who shout nonsense. There is no control. Dangerous nonsense, dangerous lies, there is no check. There is no room for nuance with the circa 98% of things which require nuance for informed debate and there is endless fake nuance and Orwellian truth twisting with the circa 2% of things that are black and white.

The INTERNET promotes me me me narcissism. The cult of the self.

I’ll stop there as the INTERNET has destroyed my concentration span and I coudn’t be arsed finishing this post properly.

I was trained specifically to fight a Russian invasion. I would fight. I wouldn’t be much use at my age but I’d fight and I’d expect every young able bodied person in the country to do the same. We fought long and hard enough for our independence to give it up to a bunch of villains from the steppes who would rape and pillage the nation. We’d be better off dead.

So you’d obviously turn away any asylum seekers who are able-bodied fleeing war?

I don’t see how that tallies in any shape way or form, but carry on regardless.

I’d say you would indeed be great use. There’s some class stories from Ukraine of older lads destroying shit loads of Russians. I was reading about the guys the US are training on the patriot defence system, the Ukrainians send there were aged from 19 to 69. They had the thing mastered in jig time.

You’d expect people to stand and fight, for their country.

What a bizarre response.
