Tom thought the Cork team were great lads for getting rid of Gerald McCarthy but the Waterford lads were cunts for shafting Justin .
Tom liked the mystique of Justin. In fairness the one thing Gerald didnāt have was a mystique
The most shameful day in Limerick hurling history
The Gerald thing sat very badly with me and still does, but then again I can never understand what would drive a fella to gut somebody like that, thereās a right and a wrong way to deal with things like that and itās rarely been done well in the GAA,
Itās a game at the end of the day
Whatever about the way it was handled the whole Justin affair in limerick was vital to where we are now. It was short term pain for a long term gain. The year of the strike completely bottomed out hurling in the county. Everybody realised things needed to change from top to bottom. Vital men like John Allen, Jerry Wallace and a few more got the cogs turning within 12 months. There was lots of mistakes after it too but if the Justin stint didnāt happen we could have limped along for another 20 years.
100%. The defeat to Tipp in 09 while absolutely a bitter swill to take, in hindsight was probably the best thing that happened. If by some fluke, weād taken Tipp that day and suffered another hole opening from Kilkenny, everyone would have said we were on the right track and just were unlucky to come up against the greatest hurling team of all time
Thatās a lovely story. Very well told
Joe McKenna turned Limerick GAA around.
Yes Iād agree. We needed that rock bottom moment and as tough as it was to take it was for the best long term.
Iām fairly sure John kiely said watching that game in the stand in Croke park led to him to get back involved with the inter county set up. He said he didnāt want to see happen again as a limerick man.
Kiely rang the County Board after that game and asked could he get involved in some way.
I believe they gave him the Intermediate job for a couple of years, which then lead to him being a selector to John Allen in 2012/2013.
I think he was involved with the 21s in 2011 in someway. Not sure about 2010.
You might be right. I think the Intermediate job was his first stint as nobody wanted it.
Shocking disrespect being show for Waterford here
Weāre used to it. We donāt mind.
Could the Limerick lads take the discussion about their managerial musical chairs circa 2009/10 to the Limerick private members area. This thread is for Waterford hurling related matters.
Fuck off back seat moderating.
Yep. Good point. That and the millions pumped into driving hurling on in the county are two pivotal factors
Money was being pumped in long before 2011 and to no avail.
You havenāt a notion.
Fucks sake
